I recently heard of a group that promoted social friendliness without infringing on the beliefs of any member. In a small neighboring community, a Roman Catholic priest and several Protestant ministers got together for coffee every weekday morning in the corner drugstore. Local resi dents unofficially nicknamed them the Saints' Club. Later, when the priest was killed in an automobile accident, the other mem bers of the club served as pallbearers. The sale of our furniture made a down payment on a used, modern 25-foot house trailer, and the difference between trailer-park rental and apartment rental made the payments. We worked at various jobs until the trailer was paid for, then we went looking for a place to take root. When I was an eager young teacher in a small rural school, I learned a lesson I've never for gotten. I tried to rule with a stern hand, but in one of my classes a clarinet class I was discouraged at the lack of prog ress.
