The Soints' Club. Differences in religion often place an invisible barrier
between people. I recently heard of a group that promoted social
friendliness without infringing on the beliefs of any member.
In a small neighboring community, a Roman Catholic priest and
several Protestant ministers
got together for coffee every
weekday morning in the
corner drugstore. Local resi
dents unofficially nicknamed
them the Saints' Club.
Later, when the priest
was killed in an automobile
accident, the other mem
bers of the club served as
pallbearers. Allan Johnson,

Life leajns Any Tim. When
my husband found that his
age was becoming a handi
cap in getting a job, we de
cided on a back-to-the-country
movement for two.
The sale of our furniture
made a down payment on a used, modern 25-foot house trailer, and
the difference between trailer-park rental and apartment rental made
the payments. We worked at various jobs until the trailer was paid
for, then we went looking for a place to take root.
We found many spots outside big cities where workers of all kinds
are in demand and age is no handicap, and finally located in Lake
County, Calif. We have a garden, flowers, a boat for fishing, and a
healthy, happy life. Mrs. Mary Landis, Clearlake Highlands, Calif.
City of Samaritans. Recently, on a return trip from New York, I
planned to stop in Dayton, O., to visit my daughter and her family.
When I arrived at the airport, a friendly porter showed me how to
dial their suburban telephone number. No answer. The operator spent
20 minutes checking, then found they had moved but their new
number wasn't connected yet.
Discouraged and a little ill, I made ready to return to Iowa. Then
the ticket agent took over. He assured me my daughter could be
located some way. Finally, we learned she had moved to a new sub
division. The porter hailed a cab, and we set out to find it.
We drove over hills, through woods and country roads, and there it
was 3,500 new homes, and no street names or house numbers! We
drove blindly up one street and down another, but the driver wouldn't
give up. Then, by sheer chance, I spotted my daughter's car.
I'm still warmed by the memory of all those strangers doing so
much to help a tired old lady. Mrs. B. C, Northwood, Iowa.
Teacher Learns a Lesson. When I was an
eager young teacher in a small rural
school, I learned a lesson I've never for
gotten. I tried to rule with a stern hand,
but in one of my classes a clarinet class
I was discouraged at the lack of prog
ress. Each week I berated the students,
finally asking them why they wouldn't
work harder for me.
One girl replied, "It's no fun working for you. You never tell us
when we do anything good." Russell A. Schwejda, Director of Music,
Casper College, Casper, Wyo.
