14 MAIL TRISUt, Medford, Oregon, Friday, April 18, 1953 OSC Gels Grant For Training Of Science Teachers Corvallis Oregon State college has been picked by the National Science foundation to offer a special eight-week summer institute this year for 50 selected high school science and mathematics teachers. It is the fourth national sci ence teacher program sched uled this year at OSC. This makes the college one of the nation's foremost centers for such work. The summer institute will be held June 23 to Aug. 15 under a $63,500 grant from NSF. Teachers selected to par ticipate will receive $600 plus tuition and fees, and some travel and dependent allow ances. Dr. Wendell Slabaugh, as sociate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Stanley E. William son, head of science education, will be in charge. Eight gradu ate courses in physics, chem istry, mathematics and the .'biological sciences have been organized for the institute ach teacher will have a -choice of four. - Most of the 50 teachers are expected to be drawn from ; western states, Slabaugh said, ; but teachers from any part of .the U. S. may apply provided they have been teaching for at 'least three years. Application ' forms are available from the ' college. Teachers are encour aged to apply as soon as possible. Similar institues are sched- ; uled in other sections of the ; country as part of a vast pro- : gram initiated by the National Science Foundation to help teachers "improve subject - matter and instruction compe- : tence and in turn to stimulate " greater interest in science ca- reers among students. ; OSC will also give a special : six-week biology institute this : summer for 50 teachers from ' small colleges and universities - under another $44,600 grant and will host the west coast - summer science conference sponsored by the National . Science Teachers association. Earlier, OSC was named by the National Science Founda tion as one of only 16 colleges in the nation to give 10-month academic year institute train ing for top high school science and math teachers. This pro gram will be continued next year under a $248,000 grant. Alcoholic Problems Produce Composite Picture of Drinkers By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (IP) Scientific psychological problems of alcoholics have produced the following com posite picture of people who can't and don't control t h e ir liking for strong drink: They're low 'in general J confide nee Ljl and in self- Deiot smith a s s u r a n ce. They avoid the unfamiliar and situations in which there is a probability of failure. They're "defeatist" and "retreatist." They would prefer "total dependence to total independ ence." Indeed, they're "not An average hen turkey lays 40 to 60 eggs a year. County Weed Plan Set Up For Area By Ray Hubbell Ragweed control in Jack son county will be handled this year by the Jackson county weed control, accord ing to Ray Hubbell, city weed supervisor. Spraying of all ragweed on private and county property should cover a total of about 50 acres, Hubbell said. He will discuss the program with George Moose, state director of ragweed control, later this month. The county also has enter ed an agreement with the state highway department to control noxious weeds, includ ing ragweed, on state high way property. Spraying has already begun on broadleaf weeds along county roads and some state routes. Hubbell and County Agent Earle Jossy this week com piled a list of 20 weeds "pos ing the greatest problem from the standpoint of economic importance to Jackson county agriculture." The seven primary weeds listed were white top, punc ture vine, Russian knapweed, Canada thistle, leafy spurge, marlahan mustard and ragweed. Secondary noxious weeds include Bermuda grass, quack grass, Johnson grass, wild morning glory, yellow star thistle, chicory, buckhorn plantain, corn cockle, white cockle, dodder, curly dock, spiny lotbur and poison hem lock. True, they like to be with people, but it is largely "to be looked at." They want to be the center of fanfare and for that reason they choose activities which have color and glamor. Self -Preoccupied But they're not really so cial because they're too pre occupied with themselves. Their emotional contacts with other persons are. not close because all that goes out from them is their talk, and all that comes in that is meaningful to them is fulfillment of their own wishes. Socially they're irrespon sible. They withdraw from the unpleasant and they're neither humanitarian, nor altruistic. They don't take tension well, and they try to stay out of jobs and situations in which tensions develop. Their choice is to be "breezy" and "happy-go-lucky." The probings into alcoholic personalities were done by Maj. Ronald C. Force, phy chologist of the Air Force. His subjects were young Air Force men convicted by court martial of crimes. They were to be "retained" with the idea of rehabilitation and a return to duty. Offenses Repeated The Air Force experience had been that alcoholics among its prisoners repeated their offenses, once they were restored to grace, at a rate three times greater than that of non-alcoholics. The prob lem was to sort out the alco holics for special attention since alcoholics rarely admit to their alcoholism. Force's job was to work out psychological tests which would show them up. All pris oners had to take a number of these tests before their re training began. Force reported the results to the Yale University Center for Studies on Alcohol.
