To day, we have 83 approved medical schools and soon we will have a few more. These schools are training 29,003 medical students. Prior to 1910, there.were in Oregonian Tells Indo Experiences Roseburg (IP) A 53-year-old Winston, Ore., man just back from Sumatra said Mon day the Bechtel Company and employees "co-operated with out choice" with government troops and rebels in the In donesian civil war. Lyle Rice, a logger for Bech tel, left Indonesia March 13. He had been building a road to the oil rich Sumatra fields leased by Caltex Oil in the area of Dumai on the east coast of Sumatra. Rice said: "The company was forced into turning over the supplies and buildings as far as I knew. Government forces took over pre-fab steel buildings and moved troops into them; commandeered trucks; took boats over any thing they wanted. I had a truck taken from me. We co operated without choice." Rice added that the govern ment forces were equipped with Russian cars and trucks. The soldiers were armed with "burp" guns. ;.' Dulles Sees Early Pre-Summif Talks Washington (IP) Secre tary of State John Foster Dulles Monday voiced hope that pre - summit diplomatic talks with Russia will begin "in a few days" and that they may lead to "substantially" steps toward disarmament. But Dulles quickly said he was not sure this would be the case. He made the remarks in a general review of world prob lems before the International Press Institute. ' At the same time Western sources in London said the West will accept Russia's pro posal to begin preliminary ambassadorial talks in Mos cow possibly as early as Thursday. But the sources said the West would not com mit itself in advance to a sum mit conference as Russia in sists regardless of the out come of the preliminary dip lomatic discussions. Johnston Stores 112 SOUTH RIVERSIDE jp (TiPST Roundup i Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation the United States over 300 di ploma mills, places in which practically anyone could quickly get a medical degree. Fortunately, the disclosures of the Flexner report caused so much public disgust with these institutions that nearly all of them closed their doors. Only a few such schools are still open. Then most states passed laws making It harder for the "graduates" of such places to get a license to prey on the public. I was interested the other day that our medical schools, besides training physicians, provide instruction for 62,889 other people, among them students of dentistry, pharma cy, nursing, and laboratory technics; also, - interns, resi dents, and persons "vorking toward advanced degrees. Practically all approved medical schools require at least three years of college study, and 51 schools require four years. Only a small por tion of the $200,000,000 need ed by the schools in one year comes from students' fees. Hence, each year, much mon ey has to be raised from sev eral sources. Every one of us in this country should be con cerned with this problem of supplying the people with enough well-trained physi cians. We never know when the day will come when we, ourselves, will be ill in bed, in great need of a skilled phy sician.
