Much depends on their age and, of course, the severity or m i 1 d n ess of their diabetes At a recent meeting in Kalam azoo some 500 phy sicians gather ed to hear Dr. Ernst Pfeiffer, from Germany, and Dr. Rach miel Levine, of Chicago, tell about their experience with the new drug. They agreed that it is useless for persons who got their diabetes before they were 25. Such persons have a pancreas that does not make much insulin, and so they usually have to keep taking some by injection. Most of the men and women who get diabetes before they are 40 are also likely to need insulin. They seldom will be able to get by with the drug taken by mouth. If diabetes comes in later life the per son's ability to get along with pills will depend on how much insulin, he won't be able to shift to the pills. Also he may not be able to rely on pills if the severity of his diabetes tends to vary mark edly from day to day. But, with all these restric tions, the doctors think about half of the millions of dia betics in the country will be able to use the pills. Appar ently, however, one patient in 12 will find that the drug will not help him; one in 12 will be helped for a while, and then the effects will wear off, and a few will have to quit using the drug because of side-effects, such as skin rashes, nausea, and vomiting. French Premier To Request Vote Paris (IP) Premier Felix Gaillard will ask an emer gency session of the National Assembly Tuesday to give him a vote of confidence on his handling of the dispute with Tunisia. Gaillard won a temporary victory over his right-wing op ponents in a marathon cabinet session this weekend and de cided to ask for the vote so he would have a free hand to set tle the criss. The actual voting would come at least 24 hours later. Leaders of French political parties held a series of meet tings today to decide whether to accept or reject the govern ment's new plan for settling the crisis with Tunisia. The political leaders indicated they might give Gaillard a close victory but indications were he would have to fight desperately hard to win. Bear-Beaver Trade Okayed By Reds Portland (IP) . Russia says it will be glad to trade Russian bears for Oregon beavers. Jack Marks, Portland zoo director, was informed Fri day of the Soviet's willing ness in a letter from I. G. Shylaev of the Central Zoolo gical Office in Moscow. Marks said dans now were being considered for flying the beavers to Moscow and the bears to Portland. Six animals from each country would be involved. THE BARE FACTS Billericay, England (IP) Maurice Cathie, 47, was ar rested for riding on a train without shoes or clothing. "Everybody has his own pecularities," Cathie said, this is mine." PURUCKER'S SAVE ON Plan Each Week a TOP HIT! W 65(5 Each Week a Long Play Record A 98 Reg. 3.98 Special Selection Changes ea. wk. PURUCKER'S MUSIC HOUSE 111 North Central wassVwja.S Dr. Alvarez f 0 J - Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medicine. Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation Fortunately, no serious ill nesses due to the drug have been reported. Dizziness and Ear Noises In the Elderly Recently, my old friend, Dr. O. Erik Hallberg, of the Mayo Clinic, reported a study of 178 persons who had sud denly lost hearing and, with this, had begun to suffer from dizziness or a poor sense of balance, plus noises in one ear. In at least half of these cases the patient, fairly ob viously, had suffered from, a little stroke, due to the plugging-up of a small artery in the brain. Naturally, treatment in these cases is not very satis factory, and the patient's main hope must be that with time, the symptoms will quiet down. As Dr. Hallberg says, all those who love to eat too much would do well to eat less and reduce weight. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
