Short Cuts Your annual bout of Spring cleaning needn't be the tiresome job it always was, thanks to the many time- and labor-saving products and appliances now available. If you also keep some of these short-cuts in mind, you and your home should be able to greet the season with a sparkle! First see that your vacuum cleaner and attachments are in good working order. Then on your next shop ping trip, check the most efficient cleaning products for various household chores. They can cut your cleaning time in half. For instance, there's a cleaner designed specially for hard-surface floorings and painted surfaces that requires just a once-over wiping and no rinsing. There are liquid spray cleaners that make windows and glass surfaces sparkle with a minimum of effort. And there are easy-to-wield squeeze mops that make floor-cleaning a breeze. Here are a few tricks to remember, come cleaning time: Whether your walls and ceilings are painted, papered, or rough-textured, ceilings should be dusted before walls. Start in one corner and use a wall brush, vacuum attachments, or cloth-covered broom. To remove cobweb, use an upward stroke and lift away from the surface. Walls should be dusted from the top down. Walls and ceilings should always be thoroughly dusted before they are washed so loose dust will not be turned into mud. For getting into crevices when washing woodwork,, use a small brush dipped lightly in the solution. Before tackling furniture, remove all small objects. For wooden tables, there are special no-rub cleaning polishes and waxes that are easy to apply. If any furniture needs a touch up before polishing, here's how to remove common blemishes: Water rings rub on camphorated oil with the grain of the wood. If rings are bad, they may need sev eral such applications. Heat marks rub camphorated oil over marks with light strokes. If damage is heavy, rub gently with dry steel-wool soap pad, wiping up powder before starting new area. Sticky drawers rub runners with paraffin or soap and slide drawer out a few times to lubricate. This is better than oil, which might soak into wood and stain it. Between professional cleanings, iugs and carpets can be laundered at home with special shampoo; cleaning powder, or cleaning fluid., Whichever you choose, be sure to vacuum rugs on both sides first. If you discover any frayed edges, cover with tape. Aindow shades made of parchment or paper-parchment may be sponged off. Silk and fabric shades may be cleaned quickly if they are sewed not glued to the frames by immersing in thick suds. Rub spots gently with a soft brush, rinse, and pat with bath towel until the shades no longer drip. For quick dry . ing, turn on an electric fan or hang in shady spot outdoors. Venetian blinds should first be dusted on both sides with the round brush tool of the vacuum cleaner. To wash, put on cotton work gloves with fluffy side out, dip in cleaning solu tion, squeeze hands together until just damp, and run gloved fingers along each slat. This cleans top and bottom at same time, and protects fingers, too. No Spring cleaning is complete without fighting Old Man Moth with a preventive, like naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, for moths de stroy at least $300 million in clothing and furnishings every year. Para is available in nuggets and flakes, while naphthalene may be had either in flake or ball form. How much to use? Two pounds of para, for 100 cubic feet of space is a safe rule. Therefore,, a closet about seven feet high, five wide, and three deep would require about two pounds. For riapthalene, the general rule is to use approximately twice the amount recommended for para. In using either chemical, it's im portant to remember that the vapors aie heavier than air and therefore sink, so moth preventives should be placed on a high shelf or suspended from a hook or clothes rod high in the closet. In a trunk, they should be scattered between the garments with the heaviest layer toward the top. Spring is a fine time to clean your closets and dry -clean or brush and air all clothing. Because moths lay eggs in almost any cranny and larvae are difficult to detect, you can seldom feel sure your storage areas are free from contamination. The best course, . therefore, is to use preventives . as though you expect the worst. 1 Brushes are to use to wipe dirt away. Tape is to mend before it's too late.
