Written for the United Press In some circles it is con sidered almost bad taste to raise the subject of death in any but a joking or facetious way. Some of our poets and philosophers have touched on the subject occasionally, as if to offer comfort to a doomed people. One thinks of the lines penned by Britian's tragic young Rupert Brooke: Mid youth ana son, feasting and carnival, "Through laughter, through the roses, as of old, "Comes death, on shad ow and relentless feet, "Death, unappeasable by prayer or gold; "Death is the end, the end. "Proud, then, clear-eyed and laughing, go to greet "Death, as a friend!" But why greet a killer as a friend? If the only role of death is to throttle life, to put an end to the laughter, what's so friendly about it? or why should we survey the situa tion "proud, clear-eyed, and laughing?" We Need Faith Without a faith or some sort, without a belief the good God and an afterlife, we would probably give in to de spair. We are not poets or philosophers, most of us. We're just plain, ordinary people, trying to take life in stride, to clear each hurdle as it comes our way. And then every once in a while we lose someone who is dear to us. . . Taken as we are today, we are in a pitiable plight. We're something like angels inhabit ing the bodies of animals. We have a strange dignity of our own. We think, and imagine, and remember. We laugh and cry. We listen to great music and sit in attendance on stories of comedy and trag edy. Then after such sublime and dignified occupations, we get hungry and, somewhat like the animals, we must eat in order to live. Now here is where Good Friday comes in: Jesus Christ Our Lord and God, the sec ond person of the Blessed Trinity, loves us so much that He took a human body just like ours. And just like ours, his body had its limita tions. Jesus used to get hungry and thirsty. He used to get tired out. And finally He Died. Overcomes Temptations Had sin any power over Jesus? Definitely not. But he did allow Himself to be tempt ed and, of course, He over came those temptations. We believe, too, that the blood and agony of his last day on earth was caused by our sins that is, Jesus made a free offering of Himself as a vic tim for our sins. He permit ted sin to vent the full force of its fury on His innocent person, even to the exacting of that traditional wage or plenty of sin the separation of soul and body in death. But however dark our Good Friday may be, we know that in a few hours we shall have the risen Christ! the ex emplar, the pattern of what we too shall one day be if we keep faith with Him. This church building, located across from the Jacksonville museum, was built in the early years of Jacksonville following the discovery of gold. The church still stands as originally built, with the same belfry and bell, organ, doors, windows, benches, floor, and square nails. Recently the roof was re-shingled and the belfry was straightened and made secure 'by the city of Jacksonville.
