Studies and research on it are conducted under Air Force contract by Rocketdyne, of Canoga Park, Calif. 1'Flash Advisory' Aids Air Pilots Already Aloft Salt Lake City (IPS The U. S. - Weather Bureau has come up with a new service to help warn pilots of changes In weather conditions that .jrright imperil their planes. Iff called a "flash advis ory" and is particularly de signed to aid airmen who are already aloft. ." The first special advisories Vere issued at aviation fore cast centers throughout the nation on March 15 and were explained to United Press .during an interview with .John C. Eberhardt, meteoro logist in charge of the Salt Xake City airport weather station. The flashes will be issued .. only when forecasters deter ' mine hazardous conditions , have come up that pilots I Should knov.' about. In effect, they supplement the regular forecasts, good for the next 24 hours, that are made by jthe weather centers every six thours. The fall rainbow trout egg take at Leaburg, Oak Springs, and Roaring River hatcheries closed at mid-January with a record take of more than 7,497,000 eggs, most of which were transferred to other sta tions for hatching and rear ing. Another 725,000 fall rain bow eggs were produced at the McKenzie and Willamette plants. Totals 1.013.000 Cutthroat trout egg produc tion at the Bandon and Alsea hatcheries totalled 1.013.000, with probably another 300, 000 yet to go. The Alsea sta . tion also completed its silver salmon egg take with a total production of 52,300. - . More than 1.500,000 ko kanee were shipped into the state from Montana and were dispersed to the Fall River, Wallowa, and Wizard Falls hatcheries for incubation. All hatcheries are now in the process of preparing for the production of eggs from spring spawning stocks which should get under way by mid- "March. The beam channel usually broadcasts a signal that gives a continuous tone when an airman is "on course" along the invisible regularly estab lished airways. If he is on one side, hears a Morse code "A".' If he is on the other side of the beam, he receives an "N" signal. This beam customarily is broken only at hourly inter vals to give scheduled reports of weather conditions along the airway and conditions at terminals. However, Harritt and Eber hardt explained, it can be in terrupted on an emergency basis for broadcast of the "flash advisory" . weather warnings. Stations are so placed that pilots are always within range of a broadcast. Eberhardt said the flash warnings are issued when forecasts show the presence of conditions that would cause locally severe torna does, thunderstorms, h a i I storms, dust storms, icing con ditions or extraordinary tur bulence. They also are prepared to warn of phenomena produc ing low ceilings of 1,000 feet or less, restricted visibility of two miles or less or strong, gusty surface winds over an area of at least 3,000 square miles. First Day j On the first day of the new service, conditions in the Salt Lake City area were normal and no flash advisories were issued from here. But a look at the CAA com munications network copy showed that forecast centers in San Francisco and Seattle were busy taking advantage for the fliers of the new system. San Francisco, in its "flush advisory No. 4" issued at 12:50 p.m., PST, warned pi lots they would encounter oc cational moderate icing con ditions between 5,000 and 15, 000 feet over the Sierra Ne vadas from Donner Summit to Yosemite Park. This warn-' ing was valid for the next four hours. Seattle, in its initial advis ory, warned that widespread conditions had suddenly de veloped that would reduce ceilings of 500 to 1,000 feet and visibility to three to five miles over eastern Washington from Ephrata to the Cascades and over the northwest por tion of eastern Oregon. Light rain and fog would be includ ed, the advisory said, with "ceilings improving only slightly in the afternoon." Eberhardt and Harritt agreed that the news service should be of great value to fliers, particularly during the winter when weather condi tions frequently worsen after planes have taken off. SMOULDERING RUBBLE Fire chiefs hold conference amid the smouldering ruins of a twine and paper factory which collapsed at the height of a five-alarm blaze in New York. Muscle Study May Broaden Heart Data Los Angeles (IP) A better understanding of the intricate mechanism of the heartbeat may result from a new tech nique of studying heart muscle in action designed by Dr. William J. Whalen of the UCLA medical school. The journal, Circulation Re search, said Dr. Whalen's method makes possible simul taneous physical and bio chemical measurements of the heart muscle action. 1 Tiny strips of human and animal heart muscle are sus pended in a small chamber in which is circulated a physio logical solution. Highly sensi tive strain gauges measure changes in the muscle strip's length, tension and. rate of contraction. At the same time, chemical changes in the solution reflect oxygen consumption of the tissue, thus giving an indica tion of biochemical activity as sociated with the muscle ac tion.
