Pacific Area Travel Conference Set For Five-Day Meeting Starting Today Santa Barbara, Calif.- An estimated 300 persons from 20 countries have ar rived for the seventh annual Pacific Area Travel associa tion conference, a five-day meeting which opens today. The conference's main pur pose is to develop means of attracting more tourists and tourist dollars to the Pacific area. In addition to speeches by leading government offi cials of several countries, the program includes specific work projects of committees. Col. Clarence M. Young, as sociation president, said he be lieved the meeting would be one of the most important the PATA has had. "The Pacific is on the thresh old of a boom in the world's largest and fastest growing in dustry the tourist industry," Young said. When PATA was formed in 1952 to facilitate, develop and promote travel among countries of the Pacific basin, there were six passenger lin ers going between the Pacific coast and Pacific countries, and a new liner will be added next month. In 1960 seven new ones will join the Pa cific fleet." Young said that there were 36 airline flights a week be tween the West Coast and the Pacific countries compared to 94 flights today and an antici pated 102 weekly by June. Young said he believed Americans would spend more than 150 million dollars each year on Pacific basin travel beyond Hawaii in the next five years, trebling the pres ent annual expenditure. Countries, island and .land areas in PATA include Alas ka, Australia, Western Can ada, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Ma cao, New Caledonia, New Zea land, The Philippines, Ameri can Samoa, Singapore, Tahiti, Taiwan, Thailand, The UnitejJ States and Vietnam. Repre sentatives of these countries expect nearly 500,000 tourists to cross the Pacific this year by air and sea. L MEMBER Coquiile Highways Closed by Water Coquiile IW Two main highways near here closed by high water over the week end were expected to open today after the swollen Co quiile river passes its crest, state police said. Closed by floods were U. S. Highway 101 south of Co quiile and state Highway 42, the only route between Co quiile and Roseburg. Water in the Coquiile river was drop nine in its uDDer reaches on Sunday. A detour was set up around the flooded portion of 101 over the Seven Devils hishwav. State police also reported that two or three houses in th Coos river area were hea vily damaged by slides caused by two days of heavy rain. OccuDants of the houses were evacuated before the slides, and no injuries were re ported. Heavy Fog Slows Los Angeles Traffic Los Angeles OP) A heavy fog today snanea iana, sea and air traffic in southern California from Santa Bar bara to the Mexico border. The fog rolled in Sunday nieht as it had Saturday night, closing down Los An geles International airport, Lone Beach Municipal air port and the Lockheed Air Terminal at Burbank. Air traffic was diverted to Palmdale and Bakersfield ter minals. Some airliners re mained grounded at stations outside the area rather than making flights into southern California under uncertain landing conditions. Forecasts called for the fog lifting by midmorning with the high temperature in Los Angeles predicted to reach 75 degrees. Nixons Visit in Southern California Los Angeles API Vice President Richard Nixon visit ed California Institute of Tech nology's jet propulsion labora tory today for a briefing by scientists who developed tne nation's successful satellite, the Explorer. The Vice President's busy round of activity also included a Republican Party reception tonight at the Hollywood Pal ladium. More than 4,000 party workers were expected to attend. Nixon and his wife, Pat, flew into Southern California Saturday for a six-day visit in his home territory. They rest ed Sunday at their hotel, meeting informally with friends, GOP leaders and a 15 - member delegation of young Southern Californians. He told the delegation one of the nation's greatest politi cal needs today is develop ment of young men for public office. Drag Race Fatal To Young Mother, Man Redwood Citv. Calif. (W Charges of negligent homicide were on file today against two hot-rod drivers whose im promptu drag race cost the lives of an expectant mother and another man. The suspects, John N. Mil ler, 22, and Fred D. Beccari, 21. were free on $1,000 bail. The victims were Mrs. Teddie Hunt, 17, mother of an 18-month-old infant and seven months pregnant, and Robert John Bruschi, 21, of San Mateo. Mrs. Hunt died of a broken neck at Sequoia hospital. Phy sicians were unable to save the baby. Bruschi died at the scene of a ruptured artery. They were passengers in Mil ler's car. Other passengers were James Hunt, 19, husand of James Hunt, 19, husband of 19, of Belmont. They suffered minor injuries. Mexico's oil resources were taken over by the Mexican government in March, 1933.
