Pacific Area Travel Conference Set For Five-Day Meeting Starting Today
Santa Barbara, Calif.-
An estimated 300 persons
from 20 countries have ar
rived for the seventh annual
Pacific Area Travel associa
tion conference, a five-day
meeting which opens today.
The conference's main pur
pose is to develop means of
attracting more tourists and
tourist dollars to the Pacific
area. In addition to speeches
by leading government offi
cials of several countries, the
program includes specific
work projects of committees.
Col. Clarence M. Young, as
sociation president, said he be
lieved the meeting would be
one of the most important the
PATA has had.
"The Pacific is on the thresh
old of a boom in the world's
largest and fastest growing in
dustry the tourist industry,"
Young said.
When PATA was formed
in 1952 to facilitate, develop
and promote travel among
countries of the Pacific basin,
there were six passenger lin
ers going between the Pacific
coast and Pacific countries,
and a new liner will be added
next month. In 1960 seven
new ones will join the Pa
cific fleet."
Young said that there were
36 airline flights a week be
tween the West Coast and the
Pacific countries compared to
94 flights today and an antici
pated 102 weekly by June.
"The jet age will revolu
tionize foreign travel," Young
said. "People will begin to
think in terms of time instead

of distance. Flying to Tokyo
will be about what it's like
to Hawaii today."
Young said he believed
Americans would spend more
than 150 million dollars each
year on Pacific basin travel
beyond Hawaii in the next
five years, trebling the pres
ent annual expenditure.
Countries, island and .land
areas in PATA include Alas
ka, Australia, Western Can
ada, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong,
Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Ma
cao, New Caledonia, New Zea
land, The Philippines, Ameri
can Samoa, Singapore, Tahiti,
Taiwan, Thailand, The UnitejJ
States and Vietnam. Repre
sentatives of these countries
expect nearly 500,000 tourists
to cross the Pacific this year
by air and sea.
