But to thousands, the winter season proves useful and sometimes makes a livelihood possible. This was called to my attention by Elio't Eli sofon, a Life staffer, who pro ceeded to tick off for me win ter's many uses. -Throughout the midwest conservationists saw holes in the ice of lakes. Through this they lower log cribs stuffed with brush to form breeding places 'for small fish that the larger game fish seek for food. Others take their old Christmas trees and carry them out to lakes where they anchor them to freeze and when the ice goes out to drop to the lake's bottom, again for cover. Thinking back to New Hampshire, I remember how maple sap was boiled down and was sprinkled atop the snow where it congealed upon striking and formed "leather aprons" which all .children love to gather up and gobble down.
