Office Building, Medford, Oregon,
March 17, 1958, at the hours shown
below for each sale area, for all
merchantable timber marked or
designated for cutting on each of
two separate and distinct sale areas
as particularized below, both lo
cated in Jackson County, Butte
Falls Ranger District, Rogue River
National Forest, Oregon. As a quali
fication for oral bidding all bidders
must submit a sealed bid accompa
nied by the required payment to
the Forest Supervisor prior to the
time set for receipt of oral bids.
Sealed bids will be posted at the
beginning of each auction for the
information of all bidders. A money
order, bank draft, cashier's or certi
fied check in the sum of the re
quired payments must accompany
each bid, to be applied on the
purchase price, refunded, or re
tained in part as liquidated dam
ages, according to the conditions of
sale. If requested by the purchaser,
contract terms will permit felling
of timber in advance of payment

Is That
For the rancher trying to
get feed to his scattered cat
tle, the housewife sloshing to
the market to shop, the busi
nessman driving to work on
slippery ice and snow, winter
seems a burdensome trial.
But to thousands, the winter
season proves useful and
sometimes makes a livelihood
possible. This was called to
my attention by Elio't Eli
sofon, a Life staffer, who pro
ceeded to tick off for me win
ter's many uses.
-Throughout the midwest
conservationists saw holes in
the ice of lakes. Through this
they lower log cribs stuffed
with brush to form breeding
places 'for small fish that the
larger game fish seek for
food. Others take their old
Christmas trees and carry
them out to lakes where they
anchor them to freeze and
when the ice goes out to drop
to the lake's bottom, again
for cover.
Thinking back to New
Hampshire, I remember how
maple sap was boiled down
and was sprinkled atop the
snow where it congealed upon
striking and formed "leather
aprons" which all .children
love to gather up and gobble
down. '
Many game wardens take
to the air to count their herds
and with the. information they
gather set. the length of next
season's hunting season.
Meat Frozen Outdoors
With all outdoors an ice
box, many farmers do their
slaughtering in winter and
freeze their meat outdoors.
In some of the Rocky Moun
tain states and on the prai
ries, some wardens take to
the air in small planes to hunt

place and after being run for
a while make an easy target.
Hunters who get bounties
sometimes take over the
warden's work. But it is a
mistake to attempt to ex
terminate these animals; they
perform a very vital and
helpful function to the farm
er when they are held to fair
ly limited number.'
If some of the high coun
try, rangers and weathermen
measure the snowfall driv
ing tubes into the snow and
weighing the snow to record
its moisture content. This in
dicates how much irrigation

available for the ; coming
year.
Fine Skid-Road
For one-horse loggers, the
snow makes a fine skid-road,
helping the logger get the
tree to the pond or the load-i
ing platform.
But besides storing water
for' the coming year so that
plants will grow, winter's
snows are employed by ani
mals in many ways. For rab
bits, it is a stepladder; as the
snow mounts, the rabbits can
reach higher to nibble tender
tips.
Some birds, like the grouse,
fly headlong in the snow at;
twilight and then spend the
night in the hollow, covered
and warm.
But I would be remiss not
to mention the winter sports
the gladness they bring to
skaters, skiers and toboggan
ists (to say nothing of the
gleam they bring to the eyes
of shopkeepers). And as to
the fisherman, hundreds of
thousands of them fish
through holes in the snow for
smelt, pike, and sturgeon.
So you see, winter isn't all
sloshing, and slipping and
dull misery. For the least of
it, come to coastal areas of
the west and south: for the
most of it, go to Yellowstone
and the northern tier of states
from Montana across to
Maine. There you stand to get
more than 120 days of snow.
