It was the 13th league win for Coach Millard Webb's Bulldogs who are unbeaten in 15 games for the full season Jacksonville took last night's other B conference clash, beating second-place Junior High Hoop Fives Nab Frays McLoughlin Junior high ninth grade evened the count for previous defeat and Hed- rick ninth also won in bas ketball competition on Tues day. McLoughlin's Bulldogs rapped Crater freshmen 46 to 36. The Hornets beat Ash land 31 to 24. Hustling play featured the performance of the Bulldogs who got fine offensive work from Bob Quinney and Dick Ragsdale and strong defense. from Phil Baird, Jerry Wine- trout. Quinney and Ragsdale. It was the top effort of the season for the McLoughlin club which is 8-2 for the sea son and 5-2 against teams of the larger schools in the Southern Oregon conference. Ragsdale had 20 points with good driving action and held down the Crater ace, Loyal Higinbotham, who stopped the Comets with 11 markers. Quinney had 18 for the Bulldogs. McLoughlin had 17 to 13, 29 to 21 and 40 to 30 quarter ly spreads. The Bulldogs yielded the first points to the Comets but took the lead aft 3er that. Hedrick, now 6-2 against larger schools, managed only Jwo 1 points in the second rtuiarier but Ashland headed 15 to 12 at halftime. In the 3hird stanza Hedrick regained Xhe lead 24 to 20. Dan Sieg of Hedrick and Elmo Crapser of Ashland each had 10 points. Hedrick ninth reserves meet Phoenix here Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while the sev enth and eighth go to Ash land for Friday play. RIVERSIDE MAIL TRIBUNE Butte Falls 55 to 47 to assume third spot. The Loggers of Butte Falls now have five set backs as Talent's closest rival in the standings. Each has three loop frays to play. Talent will meet the Klam ath county titlist in a two-out-of-three play-off starting on March 6 at Southern Oregon college gym. Malin, at last re port, was riding the top among Klamath schools but Merrill has been labeled the team to watch. Combs Has 21 The Bulldogs led at every intermission over Prospect with counts of 13 to 6, 29 to 16 and 39 to 25. Phil Combs sparked Talent with 21 points and Jerry Baer had 15. Jim Davidson had 14 for the Cougars. Reserves played much of the game for Talent. Jacksonville and Butte Falls were tied at 40-each after three cantos. The Redskins hopped in front but Butte Falls knotted the game again at 42 and 44. Eldon Smith's long shot for 46 to 44 with about five minutes to play put the 'Skins on top for keeps and they padded out the score in the last couple of minutes. Moving the ball well and scrappy performance paid off for Jacksonville. Butte Falls was in front 17 to 14 at the quarter but Jack sonville led 30 to 29 at half time. Jim Irwin of the Log gers paced all point makers with 20 and Eldon Smith put in 18 for Jacksonville. Talent had good news in the report that regular Buzz Heard's shoulder was just badly bruised and not broken in the St. Mary's game last night. February 12, 1957 Dons Club St. Mary's In WC Play By UNITED PRESS The third - ranked Univer sity of San Francisco Dons are standing 10 feet tall In the West Coast Athletic con ference today and probably won't shrink an inch by the time the regional NCAA Bas ketball playoffs roll around. Proving once again that 13 is just another number, the Dons romped over St. Mary's, 69-49. It was their 13th straight victory, the 16th in 17 games, and virtually clinched their fourth straight crown. A victory for St. Mary's would have gained the Gaels a tie with USF for first but the loss dropped them into third place, as Santa Clara moved into second with a 60 48 win over College of Paci fic. Coach Phil Woolpert's Dons weren't taking any chances on bad luck. They grabbed a 15-4 lead on St. Mary's, were in front 31-12 at half time and coasted home. St. Mary's Dick Sigaty led the scoring with 18 points, while Gene Brown had 16 for the win ners. Weiss Blasts Yankee Stars St. Petersburg, Fla. (IP) Casey Stengel insisted today he "ain't mad at anybody, but . . . Then he went on to tell three of his Yankee stars Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Bob Turley they were rather fool-hardy to risk in juries by playing in, a benefit baseball game this early in the spring. Stengel, supervising the Yankees' rookie school here, made his comments after Gen eral Manager George Weiss in New York had criticized Mantle, Ford and Turley for appearing in a charity game at Key West, Fla., last Sun day. I The game was staged by the Major League Baseball Players' association and all proceeds were earmarked for old-time ball players and their widows.
