By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York OF) Scientific efforts to understand the full meanings of sex have now reached the point where a s c i e n t ist can rightly say whenever the sex of an individual is s p ecified what sex do you mean? Science has Delos Smith n O W shown that any individual has (1) genetic sex; (2) gonadal sex; (3) anatomical sex; (4) hor monal sex; (5) social sex, and (fi) psychological sex. For tunately, in most all indi viduals all these "sexes" agree and the .individual is indubitably male or female. Exceptions Stimulating But there are exceptions, and these exceptions are stim ulating scientific thought and investigation. As the interna tional technical journal, "The Lancet," points out: "Results at any sex level may be equi vocal; and when unequivocal they may disagree with equal ly unequivocal results at any other level." The case in point in cur rent scientific discussion is that of an infant taken to Drs; J. B. Ashley and C. H. Jones of Liverpool at the age of 10 days because of "doubts about the 'true sex'." The doc tors have reported their be wilderment both at a science meeting and to "The Lancet." Some Doubts Arose The doubts arose from an anomality at the gonadal sex level which turned out to be quite minor. In hormonal and anatomical sexes, examination proved that the infant was most definitely female. Social and. psychological sexes are not measureable in infants, of course. But in genetic sex, this in fant was as definitely male. Here it must be explained that the identification of genetic sex is a rather recent triumph of science. It has been shown that the nuclei of female body cells contain, "drum sticks" not found in male cells. Genetic sex is the sex determined in the union of the chromosomes of the male and female germ cells. The infant is of scientifja interest because science can now determine the genetic sex of individuals. But there is no further knowledge th infant can provide science until she grows up. The doc tors remarked: "It will be in teresting to see whether this child attains a normal sta ture and has a normal puberty." EAGLE POINT Lions Auxiliary Meets By LAURA A. Oregon State was one of seven colleges in the nation to be given grants by the Atom ic Energy Commission for purchase of the training re actors.
