Names of Drivers Child Guidance Clinic Sunday. Jaau&ry 28, 1958 MEDFORD (ORESOIC) MAIL TRIBUNE SETOY Wilh Suspended Licenses Lisied Salem The department of motor vehicles has released names ot 374 drivers whose licenses were ordered sus pended during the period be ginning Jan. 13 and ending Jan. 17. Length of suspension varies, depending on charges in volved, recommendation of court, discretionary action by the department or require ments of Oregon law. The de partment said some of the licenses involving financial responsibility and court re commendations may h a v been reinstated after suspen sion was ordered. The department warned drivers that the penalty for driving while suspended is a jail sentence of no less than two days and up to six months and there may be imposed a fine up to $500. Under licens ing procedures, this will also result in an additional year of suspension. High School Speech Conference Slated Ashland The ninth annual High School Speech confer ence will be held at Southern Oregon college Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, according to Leon Mulling, associate professor of speech. There will be debate, ex temporaneous speaking, ora tory, impromptu speaking, radio speaking and poetry reading. Registration will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday in the Britt Student center. Fri day night there will also be a dinner for students attending. More than 27 species of mussels are found in Arkan sas streams. Receives Anonymous Gift The Southern Oregon Child Guidance clinic has received an anonymous gift of $150 for the . start of an endowment fund, board members were told at a meeting recently. John A. Graff, treasurer, said income from the endow ment could be used for cur rent expense, but the princi pal should remain intact. At torneys William Duhaime and Richard Cottle, members of the board, are making neces sary legal arrangements so the gift and others which will put into the fund, will be ad ministered properly. Thomas Goff, new psychi atric social worker for the clinic, was introduced and said he was available to be of service to the board and residents. 33 Miles Covered By Vivian Fuchs McMurdo, Antarctica HP) British expedition leader Dr. Vivian Fuchs reported by radio Saturday he had cover ed 33 miles in the first day of his trelc from the South Pole to Scott base. Fuchs said the temperature was 20 degrees below zero and a brisk, 20 mile-an-hour wind was drifting the snow. He said the surface was somewhat soft but he expects to step up his speed to 40 miles a day. He is using only snow tractors, having left at the South Pole the two dog teams and sledges that he took on the first half of his trans Antarctic trek. , Up to Saturday night the weather at McMurdo still was too poor to permit two U.S. Navy Neptunes to fly to the South Pole to - get the dog teams. Heavy Fog More Than Normal Here The number of occurences of heavy fog in the Rogue valley this winter is more than normal, but less than the record number for No vember, December and Janu ary, the weather bureau re ported Friday. So far this winter, there have been 44 occurences of heavy fog. The average is 32. Fog is considered heavy when visibility is a ejuarter-mile or less. Heavy fog is reported whether it remains all day or only a few 'minutes during the day. During November, 1957, there were 14 occurences, compared to an average of 9, and the record of 17, in No vember, 1956. Last month, there were 16 days in which heavy fog was reported. The greatest num ber was 23 in December, 1956, and the average is 13. So far this month, there have been 14 heavy fogs, four more than the average for January. The record for the full month is 17, reported in 1931. Mrs. Warren Wolf submit ted her resignation from the board, and Dr. Brandt Bar- tels and Mrs. John Bohnert, cochairmen of the nominating committee, are considering new members for the board who will be elected at the an nual meeting in April. Dr. A. Erin Merkel. admin istrator of the clinic, reported on a survey he made compar ing support procedures for child guidance clinics in oth er counties of the state. He said the Southern Oregon Child Guidance clinic support came from several sources and that community support was greater in Jackson coun ty than In other counties re porting. The clinic provides both diagnostic and actual treat ment for children with emo tional problems. Besides Goff, Dr. Harry Danielsop., psychi atrist, and Dr. Harold Dick- man, psychologist, are associa ted with the clinic. Milk Prices Drop In Illinois Area Moline, 111. (IP) Retail milk prices tumbled Saturday from the usual 41 cents a half gallon to nine cents in the quad-city area of Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, 111., and Davenport, Iowa. A price cut by a grocery chain Wednesday apparently set off the price war. One store was reported to have of fered a half-gallon of milk free with a $5 order of groc eries. Th managers of most stores said they expected that prices would return to normal Mon day. Meanwhile, there was no limit on purchases and cust omers stocked up oi milk. Six cases were reported in Ashland, four in Shady Cove, three in Medford and one in Phoenix, according to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county health physician. Eight cases of mumps, five in Medford, two in Ashland and one in Talent, were reported last week. There were four pneumonia cases reported in Medford and one in Butte Falls. Four cases of measles, two impeti go, one strep throat, 'two scalp ringworm and one tu- berculosis also were, reported. Two cases of scarlet fever were reported last week. The opportunities include leave and financial assistance to selected nurses for attend ing universities. In addition to in-service training for man agement and supervisory pos itions, hospital training in nursing specialties, orienta tion program for alj nurses entering VA, and opportunity to attend nursing institutes, and workshops throughout the nation, are offered, he said. Vacancies for nursing posi tions are throughout the VA hospital medical program. BORN, DID TOGETHER South Shields, England (IPI David Rcay and his wife Mary, who were born on the same day, were cremated to gether Thursday. Both were born June 19, 74 years ago.
