33 Miles Covered
By Vivian Fuchs
McMurdo, Antarctica HP)
British expedition leader Dr.
Vivian Fuchs reported by
radio Saturday he had cover
ed 33 miles in the first day of
his trelc from the South Pole
to Scott base.
Fuchs said the temperature
was 20 degrees below zero and
a brisk, 20 mile-an-hour wind
was drifting the snow.
He said the surface was
somewhat soft but he expects
to step up his speed to 40
miles a day. He is using only
snow tractors, having left at
the South Pole the two dog
teams and sledges that he took
on the first half of his trans
Antarctic trek. ,
Up to Saturday night the
weather at McMurdo still was
too poor to permit two U.S.
Navy Neptunes to fly to the
South Pole to - get the dog
teams.
Heavy Fog More
Than Normal Here
The number of occurences
of heavy fog in the Rogue
valley this winter is more
than normal, but less than
the record number for No
vember, December and Janu
ary, the weather bureau re
ported Friday.
So far this winter, there
have been 44 occurences of
heavy fog. The average is 32.
Fog is considered heavy when
visibility is a ejuarter-mile or
less. Heavy fog is reported
whether it remains all day or
only a few 'minutes during
the day.
During November, 1957,
there were 14 occurences,
compared to an average of 9,
and the record of 17, in No
vember, 1956.
Last month, there were 16
days in which heavy fog was
reported. The greatest num
ber was 23 in December, 1956,
and the average is 13. So far
this month, there have been
14 heavy fogs, four more than
the average for January. The
record for the full month is
17, reported in 1931.
Mrs. Warren Wolf submit
ted her resignation from the
board, and Dr. Brandt Bar-
tels and Mrs. John Bohnert,
cochairmen of the nominating
committee, are considering
new members for the board
who will be elected at the an
nual meeting in April.
Dr. A. Erin Merkel. admin
istrator of the clinic, reported
on a survey he made compar
ing support procedures for
child guidance clinics in oth
er counties of the state. He
said the Southern Oregon
Child Guidance clinic support
came from several sources
and that community support
was greater in Jackson coun
ty than In other counties re
porting.
The clinic provides both
diagnostic and actual treat
ment for children with emo
tional problems. Besides Goff,
Dr. Harry Danielsop., psychi
atrist, and Dr. Harold Dick-
man, psychologist, are associa
ted with the clinic.
Milk Prices Drop
In Illinois Area
Moline, 111. (IP) Retail
milk prices tumbled Saturday
from the usual 41 cents a half
gallon to nine cents in the
quad-city area of Rock Island,
Moline and East Moline, 111.,
and Davenport, Iowa.
A price cut by a grocery
chain Wednesday apparently
set off the price war. One
store was reported to have of
fered a half-gallon of milk
free with a $5 order of groc
eries.
Th managers of most stores
said they expected that prices
would return to normal Mon
day. Meanwhile, there was no
limit on purchases and cust
omers stocked up oi milk.
However, one shipper re
flected a widely-expressed
view when he said, "I wish
it were meat prices that Svere
falling; meat can be stored
easier for longer than milk.
