OSC Plays Huskies; Ducks Face Cougars By GENE BRYANT United Press Sports Writer Only two games are on tap In the Pacific Coast confer ence tonight and what they are likely to prove is that it is going to be a long jump from the second to the first division this year. While a five-way race for the conference championship is in full swing, the have-not squads will be scrambling to stay out the cellar in a dog fight of their own. Oregon State's Beavers dropped to the 13th spot in the national rankings after an upset loss to California last weekend, will host the Wash ington Huskies, a team that has had little to offer this year except Doug Smart and Thunderbird Leadership Deadlocked Palm Springs, Calif. (IP) The exciting battle for some thing new in prizes apparent ly breqht out the best in the professional golfers as they teed off in the second round of the $15,000-plus Thunder- bird Invitational golf tour nament today. Because 83 per cent of the 42 pro starters shot par or better, there was some belief that more than one man waj bearing down for not only the $1500 first prize, but the add ed attraction of a new Thun derbird as well. Young Dave Marr of Rum son, N.J., one of the great prospects to join the tourney trail and the well - seasoned Fred Hawkins, El Paso, Tex., led the pack as the second round got under way with great six-under-par 65s Thurs day. While in most tourna ments that would put them well in front, in this one it gave only a two-shot lead over Gene Littler, San Diego, and Tommy Bolt, Chattanoo ga, Tenn., and only three over four others, including defend ing champion Jimmy Dema ret, Kiamesha Lake, N.Y. BIG Y CLINCHES Big Y market kept its rec ord unmarred and clinched the regular season crown of the Medford Independent Basketball league with a 94 to 58 win over Eagle Point "Wednesday. Second p 1 a ce Myron Root downed Stan dard Stations 100 to 81 and lost to Eagle Point 78 to 68 in games which previously were not reported. a win over highly-touted Michigan State. The Staters are in second place in the PCC with a 3-1 mark while the Huskies are a step from the cellar with a 1-4 record. Washington, while trouble some at times, will have to go some to dump Oregon State on the Beavers' home court. Slats Gill's crew is hot on the tails of California and UCLA, who are tied for the PCC lead with 5-1 records, and a loss to the Huskies would serious ly hamper OSC's champion ship aspirations. Starting Trouble In the only other PCC game scheduled, Washington State will trangle with an Oregon team that has had trouble getting started this year after compiling an impressive pre season record. The Webfoots, 1-3 in conference play, hope to give the last-place Cougars a firmer grasp on the bottom rung they now hold with a 1-5 record. Idaho and the four Califor nia clubs are idle. Although no league games are scheduled in the West Coast Athletic conference, San Francisco's third-ranked Dons will return to action after a two-week layoff when they meet San Francisco State in a non-conference en counter. The Dons are off and run ning in the WCAC with a 3 mark and seem assured of a berth in the Western Region al this March. The 'Gators are leading the pack in the Far West Conference but are way out of their class in this one. San Diego State will host Arizona (Tempe) State in an intersectional contest while Humboldt State meets South ern Oregon and Chico State takes on Nevada in other games tonight.
