Ducks Face Cougars

Only two games are on tap
In the Pacific Coast confer
ence tonight and what they
are likely to prove is that it
is going to be a long jump
from the second to the first
division this year.
While a five-way race for
the conference championship
is in full swing, the have-not
squads will be scrambling to
stay out the cellar in a dog
fight of their own.
Oregon State's Beavers
dropped to the 13th spot in
the national rankings after an
upset loss to California last
weekend, will host the Wash
ington Huskies, a team that
has had little to offer this
year except Doug Smart and
Thunderbird

teed off in the second round
of the $15,000-plus Thunder-
bird Invitational golf tour
nament today.
Because 83 per cent of the

better, there was some belief

bearing down for not only the
$1500 first prize, but the add
ed attraction of a new Thun

gave only a two-shot lead
over Gene Littler, San Diego,
and Tommy Bolt, Chattanoo
ga, Tenn., and only three over
four others, including defend
ing champion Jimmy Dema
ret, Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.

Starting Trouble
In the only other PCC game
scheduled, Washington State
will trangle with an Oregon
team that has had trouble
getting started this year after
compiling an impressive pre
season record. The Webfoots,
1-3 in conference play, hope
to give the last-place Cougars
a firmer grasp on the bottom
rung they now hold with a
1-5 record.
Idaho and the four Califor
nia clubs are idle.
Although no league games
are scheduled in the West
Coast Athletic conference,
San Francisco's third-ranked
Dons will return to action
after a two-week layoff when
they meet San Francisco State
in a non-conference en
counter. The Dons are off and run
ning in the WCAC with a 3
mark and seem assured of a
berth in the Western Region
al this March. The 'Gators
are leading the pack in the
Far West Conference but are
way out of their class in this
one.
San Diego State will host
Arizona (Tempe) State in an
intersectional contest while
Humboldt State meets South
ern Oregon and Chico State
takes on Nevada in other
games tonight.
