Economist Urges Wiser Use of Package MFxes Corvallis Consumers counting minutes and money, can save both by wise use of package mixes. However, some mixes save more time and money than others, a home economist from Oregon State college extension serv ice points out. Cake mixes, for instance, are one of the best bargains in terms of time saved .for money spent, says Mrs. Ruth Klippstein, OSC nutritionist. With a. njix, a third of the time required to make a cake from individual ingredients can be saved and it only costs a few pennies more to buy the mix. In general, money is saved by making baked goods from "scratch" but takes more time, she says. With a mix, homemakers can save one half the time needed to make cookies, and one-fourth the time needed to make biscuits and pie crusts. Package biscuit and cookie mixes cost IVi times more than individual ingredients and package pie crusts almost twice as much. According to U.S. depart ment of agriculture reports, city homemakers are more likely to use mixes than farm homemakers. In a department survey, more than half of the city homemakers who baked a cake used a mix, compared with 34 per cent of farm homemakers. Cookies were made from commerical mixes in 20 per cent of the city kitchens and in 8 per cent of those on the farm. In the city, biscuits came from mixes a third of the time, and pie crusts a fifth of the time. This- hardy plant thrives without much care and in the dead of winter puts put flowers. Several days ago we noticed a flash of 'yellow among the twigs as we went' down the driveway in the car and sure enough, when we took a closer look there was one little branch tip in bloom, in spite of the frost and ice. Monday morning before work we snipped off six or eight lengths and made an arrangement in the little green and yellow butter dish which was a present from daughter a number of years ago. In the warmth of the news room the buds soon began to unfold and now we have a brave display of little yellow blossoms. As tar as we're concerned, how flowers can bloom in winter's cold remains one of nature's mysteries. Housewives who get all worked up about the size of their grocery bills should take a closer look at them, according to extension food specialists at .Oregon State college. Ten chances to one, the grocery bills aren't all food. The U. S. Department of Agriculture and University of California made a survey of 1000 retail grocery stores to find out how many non-food items they carried. In 91 to 93 per cent of the grocery stores, many other articles were on sale, such as "notions and drugs," they found. Chain stores were more likely to carry more of these non-food items than independent groceries, and large stores are more likely to carry them than small ones. The economists say that if you really want to know what food costs, be sure to subtract from the grocery bill such items as notions, drugs, cooking utensils, light bulbs, clothing, costume jewelry, cosmetics and magazines, all to be found in today's modern "grocery" store. Patrick O'Donovan, writer for the London Observer News service, says Americans brag about their "classless ness" but have just as many symbols of class status as people of other nations. The reporter noted this particularly in industry, where many symbols set off the executive from the rest of the employees, or are designed to signify the proper rank of the executives. Some of the common "rank symbols" are special parking places or special washrooms, some of which include attend ants, free eau-de-cologne, linen towels or maybe even a sun lamp for the higher echelons, O'Donovan found. In Detroit it seems top executives get the use of two free cars (one N for the wife), while lower executives have 'the use of company cars. -In one oil firm, a first class executive can choose be tween a Cadillac or an Imperial fifth-level executives can choose between Chevrplets or Plymouths. Brass spittoons beside a man's desk indicated high rank in the past now a carafe of ice water and glasses on. a tray, says the Observer reporter. Other important symbols of rank and power are the right to include your wife on the company expense account, membership in the country club paid by the firm, a large desk, a padded leather couch and an original oil painting on the wall. Of course, if the man has the use of a private elevator and has a real fire place in his office, then he's really reached the top. Other writers and not always foreign have commented from time to time how Americans are prone to criticize nations which support royalty, but nevertheless copy the pomp and ceremony and titles of royalty. Lodges, fraternal organizations and other groups in the United States use such titles as queen, king, prince, lord, knight, vizier and similar ranks in their orders. These officers are royally garbed in purple and gold and sit on regal thrones during elaborate ceremonies. From time to time some one speaks out against this system as "undemocratic" but apparently it is little heeded, since the groups continue to flourish. Potpourri has been saving a little anecdote about a Medford hostess. This hostess had been asked by a com mittee to give a party for a visitor -coming to the city, with all arrangements made over the phone to the accompaniment of childish laughter, screams and other family noises in the background. The hostess dutifully called several couples and invited them to the party, repeating a name which she believed to be the name of the guest of honor. She was reduced to near hysteria a few days later to discover that the name she had used was not that of the visitor and honored-guest-to-be, but that of a well known Medford business man who should have been invited to her party. r ' With one eye on the Saturday clock and the other on his typewriter, the MT sports editor produced this one: "Fish caught in the Rogue in the spring are largely small steel head." Reminded that it was quitting time and his wjfe would be waiting for transportation, Photographer Bob Vroman looked at the clock and said "There's plenty of time. She's just about now beginning to get ready to wait." O.S. Fresh pears are wonderful dessert treats for calorie watchers. Each medium sized pear contains only 60 to 70 calories, yet satisfies because of its sweet tasting levulose sugar. For, a truly gourmet dessert, treat your calorie watching friends to a perfectly ripened pear half served with a wedge of lemon or lime. Serve on a dessert plate for a spoon eating dessert.
