Gates, who served his country during World War I in the United States Army, a gift book has been, placed In the Medford and Jackson County Public Li brary. The memorial gift waa presented to the. library by Medford Post 15 of the Amer ican Legion, in accordance with the post's tradition of honoring its departed mem- bers with book tributes. The title selected for this memorial was "Peter Freu chen's Book of the Seven Seas," an exciting, colorful picture of man's adventures on the sea from the first prehistoric voyages in open rafts to daring scientific ex plorations In bathyspheres. Known At Viking The author, known to many as the "vagrant Viking," tells of the sailors who fought for fame and glory, the traders who risked their lives for wealth, the galley slaves, the whale hunters, the pirates and privateers, and the scien tists and explorers who made expeditions into the sea and across it to make new dis coveries. His book was chosen as a worthy memorial and one suitable to George Gates' par ticular interest in travel and adventure. Tribute has been paid to 33 tiprsnns rfurinir iha rnef o - - five years through memorial books donated by American Legion Post 15 to the Med ford and Jackson County Pub lic libarry, according to Li- brarian Miss Helen Webster. In each case thoughtful friends have commemorated a citizen's and a patriot's memory through providing the community with a worth while book.
