. 1 V " TWO -MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, January 7. 1958 Ike's Secretary No. 1 Girl Friday "Washington nyi Meet "Mrs. Ann Whitman, America's Number One "Girl Friday." Mrs. Whitman is personal secretary to President Eisen hower has been since 1952, and rates as his right-hand "man," because she shares the White House crises, the Presidents calms, his satisfac tions and his disappointments on the job. Most "Girl Fridays" accept as part of the job the fact that they must keep the boss' con fidences, be errand boy, ad viser, and diplomat. Mrs. Whitman does all this, but on an international basis. When the President travels, she travels also to Augusta, to Denver, to Newport, to Paris. Many a working girl might well envy Ann Whitman, for her fascinating job and for her place in the world spot light. But a second look, and few would trade their jobs for the responsibilities on "Mrs. Whitman's slim shoul ders.. She is, of course, a skilled shorthand writer and typist. She works 12 hours, or more, a day often six days B week, sometimes seven. ; Her discretion must be as flawless as her typing, since lihe is present often at-inti-rmate discussions in the Presi dent's office and has access to the top secret matter in his files. - She also must anticipate the President's moods, watch for Significant happenings. Mrs. Whitman was the one who first detected Mr. Eisen hower's speech defect after his slight cerebral attack on Nov. 25. Mrs. Whitman is well qual ified to be in a world spot Zlight. In her mid-forties, she 3s a slender, handsome worn Zan with silver hair and dark eyes, and a definite sense of jstyle. 5 Her determination on the Ziob is pretty well known raround Washington. Once she Zeven shooed Secretary of ZState John Foster Dulles out "of a compartment on a pres idential plane because he was in the way of secretaries sten cilling a presidential speech, r 4 "Meeting Planned By Jaycee-Ettes j; Central Point Central rPoint Jaycee-Ettes will meet " Wednesday, January 8, at 8 "P. Sack Silhouette Causing Heated Fashion Controversy By GAY PAULEY United Press Women's Editor New York W Mention the sack silhouette on Seventh avenue these days and you can start a controversy warm as a tweed suit in August. Most fashion houses on the avenue, heart of the nation's wholesale garment district, are all for some version of the sack or chemise or shift seeing a long run for a sil houette which hugs the body only at the hipline. But some denounce it in terms nigh onto unprintable. And a few, including the late Christian Dior, whose last col lection was shown the nation's fashion press Monday, feature the chemise as just one of several shapes for the new season. Foresees Major Change In the definitely "pro" col umn are such leading houses as Larry Aldrich, Inc., whose designer, Marie McCarthy, de emphasized waist and bust in virtually every daytime dress. "I'm convinced we're on the threshold of a major silhou ette change," said Aldrich,.in an interview before his collec- School Director To Be Speaker For Altrusa Club Dr. Alva Graham, director of the Graduate school, South ern Oregon college, will be guest speaker for a dinner meeting of Altrusa club to be held at Rogue Valley Country club, Thursday, January 9, at 7 p. m. Dr. Graham will be accom panied by Mrs. Graham, and will be introduced by Mrs Bertha Haskins, chairman of the public affairs committee which is in charge of the club programs for the month of January. Members of this committee are Miss Grace Stuhr, chief nurse of the Camp White domiciallary, Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, county clerk, and Miss Mary Pat Lucy, county home extension agent. Hostesses for the month are Mrs. Haskins and Mrs. Edna Mole. Husbands and friends " of members will be guests for the dinner meeting. Monday, January 6, the executive board of Altrusa met for a potluck dinner and meeting at the home of the president, Mrs. Enid Rankin. Happy Cakes A happy cake Is light, high and evenly browned on top, bottom and sides. A sad cake is heavy, humped and much too brown all over. Pans can make the difference. Shiny pans reflect the heat in your gas oven, allowing the cake to rise and brown evenly. Cake pans that are dark or discol ored on the outside hold the heat, making the layers bake too fast and rise and brown unevenly. v Add 2 teaspoons of chili powder, salt and pepper to a pound of ground meat for hamburgers with a western flavor. tion was shown reporters at tending shows held semi-an nually by the couture group of the New York Dress Institute. "Unfitted doesn't mean shapeless or without sex ap peal," Aldrich said. "It just means a change of eye inter est, from bust to hips and legs. 'Shelf Now Vulgar "Accent on bosom, gently rounded was fine with the 1947 and '48 fashions. Then wnmen eot comDetitive. par tinularlv on the stage and screen. They went to such ex tremes that even well-endowed women were wearing fal sies. That shelf out front no longer looked charming, just vulgar. Nettie Risenstein, who de signed both inaugural gowns for Mrs. Dwisht D. .Eisenhow er, argued instead that "wom en want to show their figures F.vervone doesn't want tc Hress in a bae. A chemise is fine for a size eight. But awful for a big bosom and twice as had for a biff derriere. Dior, who designed his New York wholesale collection shortly before his death last October 23, belted the chem ise. His legacy to spring fash ion also included the bell sil houette, with skirts full and gathered inward at the hem line: and the "blouson," or full - at - the-top, skinny-from- the-waist-down shape. Dior following the Seventh avenue trend, shortened skirts to 16 inches. Siskiyou Club Names Speaker Ashland Cyrus Radcliff e, former owner of a small busi ness and a veteran of service with the U. S. Army Air Force during World War II, will be the next speaker for Siskiyou Knife and Fork club. The din ner meeting will be held Fri day, January 17, in the Elks' Dining room, Ashland. His topic will be "Uncle Sam's Parade." Mr. Radcliffe, who spoke to the Medford club a few years ago concern ing his experiences with the National Labor Relations board, later toured the Iron Curtains countries, the Near East, Southern and Eastern Asia to observe latior condi tions and production poten tials in those countries. Club members are to make reservations with the club secretary, Mrs. R. A. Hern dobler, 1500 Oregon street, no later than January 15. , Lamb' Prices Low To get the most for your money when you buy lamb it is important to consider the cost of the lean meat, not just the price you pay per pound. Home economists with the Gas Appliance Manufacturers as sociation say that cuts differ greatly in the amount of lean they contain. This accounts for the wide variation in price of these cuts. Prices reach a seasonal low during the fall and winter months. So, enjoy lamb now while it is tops in quality and low in price. 07 J Regularly 12.95 90 o Don't Miss This TERRIFIC BUY! ffiSlPv -f'jmr Thru Sat' nly! 4hoe alon Grey Brown Black Main and Bartlett Streets Phone SP 2-6428 Second Bathroom More Important Than Second Car Washington (W ,z Which is more important to the American family a second car or a second bathroom? At a recent three-day Wom en's Housing Congress here, 100 housewives from nearly every state in the union rated a second bathroom "the most important home improve ment." The delegates were asked: "If your next home could be designed to provide facil ities for each member of the family, would it be worth an additional S5 to $8 per month in mortgage payments?" Two-thirds replied "Yes." The Plumbing Fixture Man ufacturers Association, one of the sponsors of the Congress, said their main reason was that bathroom privacy would lessen family tensions and frustrations. They wanted "togetherness" in every part of the home but the bathroom. Auxiliary Plans Monthly Session The January meeting of La dies' auxiliary to the Carpen ters' local will be held Janu ary 17 at 8 p.m. at Carpen ters' hall, 123V4 West Main street. The group held a holiday party at the home of the pres ident, Mrs. Fred Meadows, 1000 Sunset avenue. Donnie Weter, Roger Wiley and Douglas Mann who are students of Mrs. Meadows, entertained the group with several accordion numbers, The remainder of the evening was spent in playing games appropriate to the holiday season, after which a gift ex- change and refreshments were enjoyed. Sixteen members have re cently received their auxil iary pins. Winter Cottons Need Special Treatment Dark cottons don't lie they tell all. When washed with lighter clothes they be come linty. Ironing them on the right side produces a shine. Margaret Spader, home service editor of the Gas Ap pliance Manufacturers asso ciation suggests that dark cot tons get exclusive treatment in the family laundry. When starching, for instance, al ways immerse the entire gar ment in the starch solution. Spin or wring the garments so all excess starch is re moved. Miss Spader says that ironing on the wrong side prevents the shiny look. If it is necessary to touch up the right side, cover the fab ric with a soft cloth and iron lightly. That's the way the professionals do it. Always use cold water to make meat soups. Keep the kettle covered.
