He spoke at the Jack son County Chamber of Com merce roundtable Monday noon. He said lower freight rates to California because of loca tion and the slower growth of the trees in the area make the area best in Oregon for Christ mas tree production. The slow growing of the trees produces bushier trees which are more in demand, he said. California is the chief mar ket for the Oregon grown trees, buying about 3,500,000 this year. California can pro duce about 400,000 trees a year by commercial growing because of the dry conditions, he said. About 50 Member! Mace said the Southern Ore gon Christmas Tree associa tion was founded in 1956 and now has between 40 and 50 members from Jackson and Josephine counties. He urged tree growers to join the asso ciation for their own protec tion to learn value of trees, methods of growing and sell ing them.
