Wednesday. January 1. 1958 The Medical l)0. Dropsy Many old people want to know what dropsy is and what can be done for it. By dropsy, they usually mean that their ankles are swell ing, i e s p ecially Vi$ when they are on their feet. Perhaps if they will stay in bed, Dr. Alvarez :ana especial ly if they will keep their legs up on pillows, much of the water will run back out of their legs. In severe forms of dropsy, the abdomen is en larged and full of fluid, and then sometimes it has to be tapped with a trocar, which is a tube with a sharp point which can be pushed through the abdominal wall. In some cases, fluid accumulates at the base of the lungs and in the sac which surrounds the heart. In cases of nephrosis, a pec uliar disease of the kidneys which often attacks young sters, the whole body may look as if it were in a diving suit, and the face may be badly swollen. Before a doctor starts to treat dropsy he likes to know what the difficulty is. Some times, if he sees a swelling in one leg and not in the other, he will realize that the dis ease is not generalized but is probably in one of the blood vessels which supplies that particular leg. Or, the person may have what is called lym phedema, which is not a true dropsy. It is due to something wrong with the tiny vessels which carry away the lymph a fluid which bathes the cells and tissues. Unfortun ately, as yet there is no good treatment for this disease. I imagine it is based on a here ditary defect. Sometimes it is in one lee and often it is in both. Sometimes it is so de forming .that the poor girl who has it wishes she were dead. In those cases in which the leg is huge, an operation can be performed to cut out the swollen tissue, but it is not ideal, and surgeons hate to perform it. Some Fluid Remains In perhaps most cases dropsy is due to a failure of the function of the heart. When the blood is not pump ed around rapidly, some of the fluid remains in the tis sues. Often, when the heart is not working well, the kid neys also fail, and when the kidneys do not get rid of the excess of water in the body, there is a still greater tend ency to dropsy. In rare cases of severe anemia the ankles will become swollen. Some times people with big and 1 &&n The Hollywood Scene Hollywood (IP) Mamie Van Doren, her pretty face contorted in a pout, blasted singer Perry Como today ! for cancelling her appear- Von his TV i show. Perry 5fPr41 claimed me fj&W blonde glam- Wi our gill wao "too sexy vemon scott for his fam ily-type program. "And after Ray (Anthony) and I named our son after him, too," the Mame com plained. "I've never been so angry about anything before. Perry had Diana Dors and Ginger Rogers on his pro gram, and he didn't get any complaints about them. "Actually, his show could use a little sex appeal. It's been kinda dry and dull late ly. Sex is a normal, healthy part of life and Perry shouldn't worry about it so much." Eye-Catching Curves This isn't the first time Mamie's eye-catching curves have run afoul of cautious TV producers. When hubby Ray starred in a musical se ries last year his sponsors blue-pencilled Mamie. They feared no one would hear the music or commercials with Mrs. Anthony on the show. "I only appeared with Ray once," she laughed. "And even then they made me set on a piano because the spon sor didn't want me to move around the stage in my tight dress." Mamie has appeared on on ly six video programs. She claims her movie buildup has frightened most TV produc ers away. "I've played torchy girls in all my pictures. But I'm not really that way," she said. Never Posed in Nude "I've never posed in the Roundup Emeritus Con onsultant in Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation dilated veins in their legs will get swollen ankles. The person with so-called ascites,, or abdomen full of water, generally had a bad cirrhosis of the liver. Unfor tunately, there is no way of giving him a good new liver in place of the one that is all shrunk up. In some cases, the doctor is able to help dropsical peo ple by giving them medicines which strengthen the heart and make it work better. Al so, he can give so-called diu retics, which make the kid neys work better. Canker Sores People keep asking what canker sores in the mouth are due to, and hence I will say here again that, in my ex perience, they are due to the eating of some food to which the person is allergically sen sitive. For instance, if to night I were to eat a piece of chocolate candy, tomorrow I would almost certainly have painful canker sores in my mouth, sores that would stay for the next five days. First, a little blister froms; then this turns into a white patch which is painful. Usually, on the fifth day, the pain lets up. and the little place heals. The way to find out what the cause is is to keep a re cord of the unusual not the ordinary foods which one has eaten just before, the canker sore, or a crop of them, appeared. After one has had four or five attacks, all one has to do is to look at the list, and usually the answer is there. One sees that a certain food was eaten be fore each attack of canker sores. A Diet For Gout? Many keep asking how to keep from getting attacks of gout. I think the main thing is to live on a sensible re duction type diet, with just enough food to maintain the person's weight and no more. Experts do not deny people meat, but they ask them not to eat large amounts of meat and large amounts of liver, sweetbreads, and kidneys which contain the substances out of which .uric acid most easily can be made. Curious ly, a man can sometimes throw himself into an attack of gout by fasting, as when he has a cold or has been operated on. The reason for this probably is that then he lives for a while on his own flesh. F o r t u nately, today there are medicines, that tend to pull a man quickly out of an attack of gout. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to dia gnosee by mail. "There are plenty of sexy girls on TV. But they're luc ky. The never had the sex buildup that I've had. "A girl can't be too sexy on TV anyhow. The screen's too small to include a closeup of all her curves at once. Glam our girls with 40-inch bust lines look like 20s on those tiny screens. "I wasn't too warm for Steve Allen's program. He liked me well enough to put me on his show twice. "But I don't know what to do about Perry Como. It was terribly mean of him to can cel my appearance. I just may not forgive him for it." ROTC Groups On Instruction List Corvallis Air Force and Army ROTC units at Oregon State college have been se lected again this year to give light plane ilight instruction to seniors who qualitfy in flight aptitude tests and phys ical examinations and who are interested in aviation ca reers. The two units were among the first in the nation to be picked last year to offer the special instruction. Under the p r o gr a m, students receive enough flight training and ground school to qualify for p ri v a t e pilot certificates. There is no charge to the students. Seventeen Air Rorce and 13 Army ROTC seniors have been selected for training. Waifs TV & Radio Service Oldest Shop in So. Oregon 409 S.
