L. C. Hurst, of Hertfordshire, England, who tells about the big efforts being made in the Eng lish mental hospitals to unlock the doors of some of the wards in which the more rational pa tients are kept. As was to be ex pected, when doors were left open.some of the patients wand ered off and had to be brought back, but it was remarkable how few there were who took French leave. Around one hospital they put a wire fence just to keep confused people from rambling aimlessly away and getting lost. Naturdally, unlocking the doors makes the patients feel much happier. This plan is being tried out and with success in a num ber of American mental hos pitals. A New Drug for High Blood Pressure Recently, Dr. Robert W. Wil kins and Dr. William Hollander, of Uoston, reported the use of a new drug called chlorothiazide for the treatment of high blood pressure. They say that it works better than anything they have found so far, and they say it has helped people who had not been helped by other drugs. It also works well when used with some of the other available drugs. Its use also promises to help us doctors in understand ing the mechanism of high blood pressure. Economy drives in both TV and pictures with severe person nel cuts at the studios. Boom in Tapes A boom in electronic tape re cording for TV shows, increas ing the clarity and reproduction of network shows a big im provement over today's "hot kinescopes" which are seen via film. NBC promises more color shows, but its parent organiza tion, RCA-Victor, sees no cut in cost of color TV sets. The net work also offers "The Shirley Temple Story Book" for the coming year in addition to two new horse operas and an ad' venture series titled "Northwest Passage." CBS will introduce a lady cop in "The Sergeant and the Lady" series and a flock of new situa tion comedies which will make a comeback in 1958. ABC will truly become a third "major" network with the com pletion of a $30 million addition to its Hollywood studios. The Web also will add Orson Welles to its team of performers, along with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. Look for several musical-varie First Columbia Smelt Arrives in Portland Portland IW The first Columbia river smelt of the sea son was received in the Portland wholesale fish district Monday, five days earlier than a year ago. Jake Niemela, Clatskanie fish erman, gillnetted some 65 pounds of the tiny, tasty fish and brought them to Charles Byer, Portland wholesaler. His body projects away from the table. Repeatedly, he lets his trunk fall down, and then raises it up again to the horizontal position, using his hips as a hinge. This, of course, is a wonderful exercise for the back muscles, and the doctors say that in many a case it will cure backache in about 3 weeks.
