Unlocked Wards In Mental
Hospitals
I recently read an article by
Dr.. L. C. Hurst, of Hertfordshire,
England, who tells about the big
efforts being made in the Eng
lish mental hospitals to unlock
the doors of some of the wards
in which the more rational pa
tients are kept. As was to be ex
pected, when doors were left
open.some of the patients wand
ered off and had to be brought
back, but it was remarkable how
few there were who took French
leave. Around one hospital they
put a wire fence just to keep
confused people from rambling
aimlessly away and getting lost.
Naturdally, unlocking the doors
makes the patients feel much
happier. This plan is being tried
out and with success in a num
ber of American mental hos
pitals. A New Drug for High
Blood Pressure
Recently, Dr. Robert W. Wil
kins and Dr. William Hollander,
of Uoston, reported the use of a
new drug called chlorothiazide
for the treatment of high blood
pressure. They say that it works
better than anything they have
found so far, and they say it
has helped people who had not
been helped by other drugs. It
also works well when used with
some of the other available
drugs. Its use also promises to
help us doctors in understand
ing the mechanism of high blood
pressure. It is a powerful diu

Heredity and the Toxemia
Of Pregnancy
Dr. J. C. Humphries, of Balti
more has reported that the ter
rifying toxemia of pregahacy,
eclampsia with high blood pres
sure, which can cause convul
sions and even death to a mother
and the child she is about to
bear, tends to hereditary. The
doctor found that 28 of a group
of mothers who had suffered
from toxemia were themselves
born after toxemic pregnancy.
Helph for Backache
Accoding to Doctors M. H.
Dubansky and C. B. Larson, of
the State University of Iowa,
Iowa City, one of the best exer
cises to relieve many backaches
is one in which a person lies on
his stomach on a table with his
legs and thighs held down by
someone. His body projects away
from the table. Repeatedly, he
lets his trunk fall down, and
then raises it up again to the
horizontal position, using his
hips as a hinge. This, of course,
is a wonderful exercise for the
back muscles, and the doctors
say that in many a case it will
cure backache in about 3 weeks.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.
