Even if it had its trigger, cuch a price seemed unreason- able for a single shot. But Charles, a gun collector, thought otherwise. "I'll buy it," he said, after a brief examination. "It's worth $20 if only because it forms such a classic example of the sense less conservatism of the military mind. He pointed to the patent dates on the pistol. The second one was April 17th, 1866. I noted that the maker was Remington, of Ilion, N. Y. "This is a pistol made for the U. S. Navy," Charles said, poin ting to an anchor and initials, MEXICAN AMELIA EARHART o My cousin Jeanne was visi ting Mexico in April, 1935. Stale Lisis License Suspensions in Area Salem The department of motor vehicles has released names of 293 drivers whose li censes were ordered suspended during the period beginning Dec. 16 and ending Dec. 20. Length of suspension varies, depending on charges involved, recommendation of court, discre tionary action by the department or requirements of Oregon law. The department said some of the licenses involving financial re sponsibility and court recom mendations may have been re instated after suspension was ordered. The department warned dri vers that an arrest for driving while suspended may lead to a jail sentence and fine and must result in an additional period of suspension. "Just as I made that bid, I realized that the print couldn't possibly be either of the two I was hoping for. Each of them is catalogued at $1,000. They're titled - the Whale Fishery and one shows an attack on a 'sperm whale and the' other an attack on a right whale. And how I knew this couldn't be either one is that I remembered each is about 16 by 24 inches." In other words, your memory came to your rescue just in time. If this other fellow hadn't jumped you, you would have been stuck. "Not at all," he replied. "I wouldn't have been stuck at $140. I'm not fool enough to whaling prints, ana except tor the two worth $1,000 each, they all catalogue at from $150 to S200 apiece." Service from Portland and Seattle east was crippled as a re sult of the dispute. The company seeks damages against the Motor Coach Em ployees Union, contending the work stoppage was a strike in violation of the contract. W. W. Churchill, regional manager of the bus company at Seattle, said that 397 drivers, station employees and mainten ance personnel worked Dec. 3 and only 51 reported for work the following day. The union claims the company violated the contract in changing the Pullman, Wash., depot from company-operated to commission-operated. Sunday, December 29, 1957 Top Red Leader Sent To Asian Republic Moscow OP) One of the Com munist party's top leaders was dispatched Friday to the strategic Soviet Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan, apparently on a trouble-shooting mission. N. I. Belyayev, a member of the party's ruling Presidium and a party secretary as well, will become first secretary of the lo cal Kazakhstan party. Belyayev's prior assignment as a secretary of the U.S.S.R. party Central Committee enhan ces the significance of his dis patch to Kazakhstan, the largest of the Soviet republics outside Russia proper and one . of the richest in resources. Apparently his new mission involves trouble shooting. No explanation was given in Fri day's Soviet press announe ments for the removal of the incumbent first secretary, I. Yakovlev, and the second secre tary,' N. I. Zhurin. Kazakhstan strategically bor ders on Mongolia and Commun ist China.
