Navy Single Shot Pistol
Has Value to Collectors
The trigger was missing, and
though the pistol appeared in
good condition, I could see noth
ing about it to justify a price of
$20. Even if it had its trigger,
cuch a price seemed unreason-
able for a single shot.
But Charles, a gun collector,
thought otherwise.
"I'll buy it," he said, after a
brief examination. "It's worth
$20 if only because it forms such
a classic example of the sense
less conservatism of the military
mind.
He pointed to the patent dates
on the pistol. The second one
was April 17th, 1866. I noted
that the maker was Remington,
of Ilion, N. Y.
"This is a pistol made for the
U. S. Navy," Charles said, poin
ting to an anchor and initials,

Salem The department of
motor vehicles has released
names of 293 drivers whose li
censes were ordered suspended
during the period beginning
Dec. 16 and ending Dec. 20.
Length of suspension varies,
depending on charges involved,
recommendation of court, discre
tionary action by the department
or requirements of Oregon law.
The department said some of the
licenses involving financial re
sponsibility and court recom
mendations may have been re
instated after suspension was
ordered.
The department warned dri
vers that an arrest for driving
while suspended may lead to a
jail sentence and fine and must
result in an additional period of
suspension.

the piece as a firearm. How did
it rank among single shot hand
guns. In short, wasn t there
something special about it to
justify its manufacture?
Charles peered down the sev
en-inch, rifled barrel, hunting
for corrosion marks.
"It's just another .50 caliber
pistol in performance," he said.
"Nothing special.
"But lucmly for me there are
plenty of collectors who don't
feel that way. I've got another
one of these at home. A wreck
of a pistol, but it has a trigger.
And when I transfer it to this,
I'll have no difficulty at all in
getting $75 for it."
STAMP WORTH FROM $300
as a passenger in an airliner,
and she never would.
I thought it would be fun to
find the letter she had sent me
in 1935 and give it to her. With
in the hour I came across it,
neatly tied up with all the other
letters I had received that year.
My cousin was not only de-
.lighted to get the letter, she
was actually overwhelmed with
pleasure.
I swallowed hard and looked
at the cover again. It carried
merely an ordinary blue, 20
cntavo Mexican air mail stamp
of the regular 1934-5 issue, and
overprinted on it, in violet ink,
were the words Amelia Earhart
vuelo de buena voluntad Mexico
1935.
"With the stamp alone," Jean
ne continued, "worth $300, hav
it on the cover should certainly
boost it by a third."
PRINT ENLIVENS AUCTION
"It's this way," he said. "Just
as I made that bid, I realized
that the print couldn't possibly
be either of the two I was hoping
for. Each of them is catalogued
at $1,000. They're titled - the
Whale Fishery and one shows
an attack on a 'sperm whale and
the' other an attack on a right
whale. And how I knew this
couldn't be either one is that I
remembered each is about 16
by 24 inches."
In other words, your memory
came to your rescue just in
time. If this other fellow hadn't
jumped you, you would have
been stuck.
"Not at all," he replied. "I
wouldn't have been stuck at
$140. I'm not fool enough to
whaling prints, ana except tor
the two worth $1,000 each, they
all catalogue at from $150 to
S200 apiece."

Greyhound Seeks
Damages in Lawsuit
Portland (IP) Trial of a suit
as a result of a five-day walkout
earlier this month by Greyhound
bus drivers opened in Federal
Court Friday.
Service from Portland and
Seattle east was crippled as a re
sult of the dispute.
The company seeks damages
against the Motor Coach Em
ployees Union, contending the
work stoppage was a strike in
violation of the contract.
W. W. Churchill, regional
manager of the bus company at
Seattle, said that 397 drivers,
station employees and mainten
ance personnel worked Dec. 3
and only 51 reported for work
the following day.
The union claims the company
violated the contract in changing
the Pullman, Wash., depot from
company-operated to commission-operated.
DULLES GOES TO NEW YORK

dispatched Friday to the strategic
Soviet Central Asian republic of
Kazakhstan, apparently on a
trouble-shooting mission.
N. I. Belyayev, a member of
the party's ruling Presidium and
a party secretary as well, will
become first secretary of the lo
cal Kazakhstan party.
Belyayev's prior assignment
as a secretary of the U.S.S.R.
party Central Committee enhan
ces the significance of his dis
patch to Kazakhstan, the largest
of the Soviet republics outside
Russia proper and one . of the
richest in resources.
Apparently his new mission
involves trouble shooting. No
explanation was given in Fri
day's Soviet press announe
ments for the removal of the
incumbent first secretary, I.
Yakovlev, and the second secre

Washington HP) Women in
federal prisons have a better rec
ord of going' straight than men
when released, the U. S. Parole
Board revealed Thursday. The
board said that from mid-1956 to
mid-1957 85 per" cent of women
paroled went straight while only
80 per cent of men paroled did
not violate their paroles.

Spokane (IP) Although the
need for large quantities of
higher-cost standby steam power
in the Northwest power pool
seems to be slacking off, stream
flows still are "discouragingly"
below normal and use of steam
probably will continue for sev
eral days, a power official said
Friday.
Marshall Blair, vice president
in charge of power supply for
Washington Water Power Co.,
said up to 200,000 kilowatts of
steam power were brought onto
power pool lines because of "se
vere below-normal" precipita
tions in the Northwest since last
summer.

tions, he said. October rains
benefited only briefly.
