Ewing Scott, 61, self-styled investment counsellor, today faced life in prison for the murder of his wealthy wife almost three years ago. Jurors who convicted Scott of first degree murder last Satur day on circumstancial evidence returned to court Thursday to set the penalty for the crime as provided under a new Califor nia law. After deliberating for almost seven hours, the Superior Court panel of seven men and five wo men gave Ssott his life but ruled that he must spend it in prison. Disappeared in 1955 Scott's five-times married wife, Mrs. Evelyn Throsby Scott, disappeared from the cou ple's fashionable Bel-Air home in May, 1955. No trace of her has been found since and her body was never discovered. Attorney P. Basil Lambros im mediately filed a motion for a new trial on Scott's behalf and said he and the convicted man would start planning a new fight immediately. Superior Judge Clement D. Nye set arguments on Lambros' new trial motion for Jan. 14 when Scott is scheduled to reap pear in court for sentencing. No Show Of Emotion Scott heard the jury's verdict without showing emotion as he had accepted the first degree murder conviction and the ar guments of the presecution that described him as a "cold, cruel, heartless man." Deputy District Attorney J. Miller Leavy demanded that the jury show no mercy to the man who Leavy said had killed his wife to loot her 8600,000 estate. Lambros said he thought that Scott was innocent and would think so until the end of his life. He called on the jury to give Scott the benefit of any possible doubt. Scott contended throughout his trial that his wife is still alive. LAW AUTHORITY DIES Philadelphia (IP) Robert H. Brigham, 58, an authority on pro bate law, died Christmas Day at suburban Villanova. FAMILY WELCOME President Eisenhower receives a smiling greeting from daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Eisen hower, on his return to Washington from Paris where he attended crucial NATO summit conference. Afro-Asian Parley Turns To Familiar Cold War Themes Cairo HP) An .unofficial "solidarity" meeting of dele gates from 37 African and Asian nations today started preparing resolutions based on reports which voiced the Communist line on familiar cold war themes. The reports, introduced Thurs day, demanded an unconditional halt to nuclear weapons tests. They scored western countries for such things as "imperialism" and "colonialism." Pronounced Leftist Turn Early committee sessions were expected to show whether the anti-West tenor of the reports would be approved or whether some delegations would try to bring the conference closer to the neutralist line .set at the 1955 Bandung conference. The conference assumed a pro nounced leftist trend on the first day. Conference leaders refused to permit a three-man delegation of refugees from the Turkestan (Kazakh) Soviet province, now living in Turkey and the United States, to attend despite previous statements that all observers were welcome. Some of the delegates took po sitions that deviated in varying degrees from the policies voiced by their governments. Russians Present There were no delegates from such anti-Communist bastions as the Republic of Korea, National ist China, Turkey, South Viet Nam, Pakistan, Cambodia and The Philippines. The Soviet Union, which was not represented at the official Bandung Conference, had 23 del egates here. Communist China had 45. Egypt, the host country, had 83 delegates. Dennis Chavez, chairman of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcom mittee, predicted today that Con gress will give "rough going" to a defense budget as high as $40 billion. The New Mexico Democrat said that increased spending alone "is not the answer to to day's needs." Defense Department sources have said the administration will ask Congress next month to ap prove a $40 billion' defense spending figure about one bil lion higher than current spend ing to meet Russia's space-age military challenge. Chavez issued a statement criticizing the reported increase from the Bethesda Naval Hos potal where he is recuperating from a fall he suffered at his home. He also criticized reports that the President will ask Congress, in seeking an extension of the reciprocal trade act, to auth orize him to cut tariffs as much as 25 per cent. "So long as the President pro poses a huge giveaway in the the form of foreign aid and wants the American public to starve themselves for their own economic improvement, he is bound to have rough going in Congress," Chavez said. - The senator also said that Rus sia's space satellite progress "doesn't change my feelings one whit." Other developments in the de bate over defense: Sen. Charles E. Potter (R Mich.) said an unsnarling of Pen tagon red tape "might be as im portant to the defense effort as increased military spending. Defense officials said the U.S. has allotted $17,178,000,000 for missile work since "World War II, more than half of it in the last two years. This figure covers only development of mis siles and does not include the cost of building and operating launching sites. The Wall Stree Journal re ported the administration has decided to ask Congress for a special $500 million fund to be used at the President's discretion to exploit any breakthrough in the missile-satellite field.
