East Europeans are trying to drown their discontent in large amounts of vodka, schnapps and beer. In the Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany and other Soviet satellites drunkenness is on the increase. People drink not socially but to get drunk and get drunk fast. The drink to relieve the bore dom of life under Communism, to escape the constant droning of propaganda, to forget harsh economic conditions. Youths Lead Movement Taking too many drinks al moost has become an act of re sistance. Youths are leading the drink ers movement is bars just as they are spearheading resistance of another sort in colleges and fac tories. With all free political and in tellectual expression btrred, they are turning to alcohol for an outlet. In East Germany, drunks in bars, streets and public places are a common sight. They are a rarity in West Ger many. The East Berlin prosecutors office estimates excessive drink ing is one of the main causes of juvenile crime. Thirty per cent of factory ac cidents involving youths are at tributed to drunkenness. The government has threaten ed severe punishment for those who serve liquor to youths under ! 16 and it is considering raising the legal drinking age from 16 to 13. r t 11 V " . Theriot said the address was correct but added that it was not logical that a man beaten badly enough to lose his memory and then robbed could check into a hotel 2,000 miles away only three days later. Gallon claims he lost his mem ory in the robbery and regained it early in December when he fell and stuck his head at a con struction project here. Gave Baltimore Address The salesman registered at a local hotel as "Larry Desmond" and in applying for a job gave his address as Eucalyptus street, Baltimore, Md. He said he had been in Baltimore frequently while in the maritime service and may have used the address subconsciously. However, police quoted Blake ly as saying Gallon told of aban doning his wife and children in San Francisco following a seri ous domestic argument. And of ficers said Gallon could not ex plain why he sent a letter to his wife in care of a former neigh bor in San Mateo, instead of the Baltimore address. But in Burlingame, Calif., Gal lon's wife, Betty, said there had been no domestic dispute. And she insisted it was impossible for her husband to feign amnesia. "Harry has never done any thing like that in his life," she said. ' , Mrs. Gallon and her two chil dren moved to Burlingame, a San Francisco suburb, shortly after her husband disappeared. Gallon was located and identi fied to end a nationwide search that started when his blood tained jacket, briefcase and empty wallet were found in San Franciso six days after his dis appearance. Gunton, 21, of Med ford, has been awarded a Rhodes scholarship for study at Oxford university in England. Gunton is a Linfield college student majoring in chemistry and math. He will use the three year graduate fellowship to study the subjects in England. Winners of the awards are se lected after a series of inter views. Jennings of Med ford, recently returned from the Northwest Congress of Optom etry, a three-day conference in Portland.
