The authority was given in a supplemental opinion or re in accord with our annual tradition . . MEDFORD STATIONERY STORE 210 E. ' The new segment, as an nounced in the board's decision Nov. 19, grants Western a se c tion between the terminal points of Phoenix and Los Angeles. It has the restriction, however, that all flights over the segment shall either originate at Portland or Seattle and terminate at Phoenix or originate at Phoenix and end at the Pacific Northwest cities. Petition Opposed By Western Air . San Francisco (IP) The State Supreme Court denied Monday a petition for a writ of habeas corpus filed by John C. Tipton, 22-year-old Orange county murder-rapist. Tipton is scheduled to die Jan. 31 in the San Quentin gas chamber. He was convicted of fatally stabbing Mrs. Oleta O. Johnson in Costa Mesa in March, 1956. She was the 18-year-old wife of a serviceman. Portland Traction Hearing Recessed Portland (IP) A hearing on Portland Traction Company's plan to abandon interurban pas senger service between Portland and Oregon City and Bellrose has been recessed until next Monday. R. Gilman Smith, a New York transit expert, testified Monday that he did not believe there was anything which could be done to attract enough additional riders to put the Bellrose-Ore-gon City line back in the black: The hearing is being conduct ed by Howard Morgan, state public utility commissioner. COW CAUSES COLLISION Dublin, Ireland HP) A cow caused a collision Monday be tween two trains in which an en gineer was killed and three pas sengers were injured. One train stopped when the engineer spotted the cow on the tracks near Dundrum. It was rammed in the rear a few minutes later by a second train. CRATER INN MOTEL Bill and Mary Schei Wall Street Projects Business, Market To Latter Part of 1958 h United Press Financial Editor New York OPi Wall Street frowns so much when it tries to talk about early 1958 that it's got to projecting business and the market into the latter part of next year. At the end of 1958, says Gerald M. Loeb, a senior partner of E. F. Hutton & Co. bus iness men and share- Lhner Waizer owners should find themselves in a much more satisified and optimistic frame of mind compared to their feel ings and positions. This is a contrast with the end of 1956 when industry predici tions saw a good first hajf fol lowed by a decline. In that they were right. There's gloom in Wall Street just now, but Loeb thinks that many of the causes of this gloom are being eliminat ed. He lists them: Overalued Stocks Descend "Many stocks that were over valued have already descended to levels of reasonable value, and their technical situations have improved; tight money and a weak bond market have given way to an easier' credit policy and a strong bond market; and government mistakes in the handling of defense orders and payments are being rectified." Loeb believes that in all likeli hood 1958 will be a resumption of debit financing, business ex pansion. Hence 'he sees no long drawn out depression. He doesn't think a business re covery and a bull market can be built mainly on a prosperity in consumer goods such as cig arettes and drugs. - The uptrend will come, he says, after the outlook for auto mobiles and capital goods im proves, signaling a recovery for the whole economy. Economic Statistics Helpful "An examination of accepted economic statistics is helpful in indicating possibilities, he said, "but it never gives the true tim ing of a turn. Such statistics do not reveal the timing of the downturn, and they will not forecast 4he upturn until after it is an actuality. "Decisions on capital and per sonal expenditures, or on the size of inventories are made by men; and men's minds are in fluenced by their hopes and fears. If they read about grow ing unemployment, they tend to increase their savings. If they read about 'declining sales, then capital expenditures and inven tories are cut. The same eco nomic psychology holds true in the oppasite direction." He holds that in the final analysis the recovery in 1958 will stem from a restoration of confidence which will be spur red by by easier money, re newal of - inflation psychology, and increased defense expenditures. LACKED SAVING STITCH Logansport, Ind. (IP! Frank Lawler didn't have a stitch in time and it cost him a diamond ring, a watch and a table clock. Lawler was taking a bath when he heard someone in his apart ment. He didn't investigate be cause T didn't have any clothes on." Sputnik Launchings Rated as Top Story; Little Rock Second New York (IP) The launch ing of the Russian Sputnik's, marking the opening of the space age, was voted the biggest news story of 1957 by United Press editors. They took into account that the impact of the Sputniks on news paper readers and TV-radio lis teners extended far beyond the field of science. The current re appraisal of the U.S. defense policy, for instance, can be traced largely to the Soviet tri umph in putting artifical moons into space. The 10 biggest: ' 1. Sputniks. 2. The integration of Little Rock Central High school with special emphasis on the fact that federal troops were sent in to bring it about. Ike's Illness Rales 3. President Eisenhower's stroke and . the resulting con troversy about what should be done in event of presidential disability. 4. The Senate Racket commit tee investigation and the subse quent controversy inside the ranks 6f organized labor. 5. The rise of Khrushchev to the pinnacle of Soviet power and the downgrading of Russia's greatest military tiero, Marshal Zhukov. 6. The continuing turmoil in the Mid-east with the constant threat that it will poduce a maj or war. , 7. The rescue of Benny Hooper from a Long Island well. The editors noted that this was one of the outstanding human inter est stories of recent years. Baseball Games Eighth " 8. The triumph of the Milwau kee Braves in the World Series and the realignment of the Na tional League to include Los An geles and San Francisco. 9. Hurricane Audrey. 10. The international controv ersy over the Girard trial in Ja pan. Other, stories that received strong support were: The Paris NATO meeting; the stock mar ket's fluctuations; the end of the southwestern drought; Queen Elizabeth's American visit; the Asian flu epidemic; and earth quakes in Mexico and San Francisco.
