And for the rest, doctors, of ficials and volunteers are work ing hard to make Christmas as full and warm as it can be in a state institution. All of the institutions plan feasts based on turkey. Religi ous observances, parties, piays, singing, dancing and games are planned at various times. For example, the State hos pital holds its traditional Saint Nick dance for about 400 pa tients tonight. Superintendent Dr. Dean Brooks said packages were roll ing in by the hundreds from generous persons and organiza tions throughout the state. Every patient will have a package along with Christmas goodies from the institution. Walls of the wards will be dec orated with Christmas murals executed by patients. Two spec ial parties are planned for wheelchair and older patients and occupants of the maximum security ward. About 200 of the hospital's 3.550 patients will get home and Dr. Brooks said a lot more individual parties would be held at the hospital this year. None of the 1,404 inmates of Oregon State prison will leave its walls, contrary to the prac tice of some states, but each prisoner will get a package con taining oranges, nuts and candy. Warden Clarence T. Gladden said religious services are set Christmas day. Both the blind and deaf schools will close Friday, but they are doing some celebrat ing right now. Supt. Everett E. Wilcox of the blind school said a high point of their holiday observance would be an outside Nativity scene featuring two live donkeys, sheep, goats, a colt, and other animals. He said the blind students enjoyed feel ing the shape of the animals and petting them. Before their two-weeks vaca tion, 225 deaf school students will hold a Christmas program with their own Santa Claus, ac cording to Supt. M. B. Clatter buck. It was set for 1 p.m. to day. About 50 girls out of 135 at Hillcrest school will go home. The rest will see a Christmas Eve movie, have a relaxed "lazy bones" breakfast Christmas mor ning and Vesper services later in the day. Supt. Marjorie Mc Bride said games and TV watch ing would conclude the day. At Mac Laren Boys schools near Woodburn, Supt. Amos Reed said some 200 boys out of 350 would be able to leave the canpus for a period of from one to four days during the holi days. He said about 100 boys were working on a Christmas pro gram to be presented to parents and friends at 3 p.m. this Sun day. All cottages have been dec orated for Christmas. Fairview Home for the men tally retarded will also have an outdoor manger scene with live animals and the young pa tients will revive their free pub lic Christmas program at 8 o'clock tonight. It was discon tinued two years ago due to overcrowding, but a new buil ding will seat 700 persons for the event. "Absolutely no one will be without a present," Supt. Dr. Irvin B. Hill said. He added that about 300 of the 1,900 children at Fairview would get to spend the holidays with their families. East Main Si.
