"Nice things are to be said about the no ble bird," the report acknowledged in its be ginning, and thereafter said noth ing nice about it at all. Indeed, the turkey "lately has become notorious," the reason Delos Smith being that icience can demon strate that turkeys are " a reser voir" of the virus which causes the disease, ornithosis. Same as Parrot Fever Ornithosis is the same disease as parrot fever or psittaeosis. From the standpoint of a human victim, the difference is in whether he picked up the virus from a sick turkey or a sick parrot of parakeet. However, from the viewpoint of people who have no other contact with the turkey than to eat one at Christmas and Thanks giving, there is not even a semb lance of anything to worry about. WALZER United Press Financial Editor New York W Wall Street is getting a bit worried over the unanimity of the prognostica tions for 1958. They paral lel each other on such things as a downturn in the first half, a rise in the second, more govern ment, state and local spend- Elmer WaiJSt ing, and no tax cuts. Each of tJli predictions so far has been based on what the ex perts consider is the outlook for more government, federal and municipal, spending. And all are predicated on no break from the cold war. And nearly all say there'll be no tax cut. Most say no tax rise either for individuals. General Prediction Keystone said gross national product in.ihe first half of 1958 will dip to $435 billion on an an nual rate, against $435.2 billion in 1957. Personal spending is estimated to hold unchanged at $280 billion annual rate. Cor porate profits are expected to dip $1.7 billion on an annual rate and dividends are estimated to i show a small increase. i The stock market, says Key stone, will be dependent on the ' progress made by the nation's i industries. (IP) Jacob Kline, 73, president of a chain of Midwest department stores, died in a hospital here Sunday after a lon illness. He founded Kline Brothers Co., in 1913 in Lorain, Ohio. Health authorities in all turkey growing states enforce strict regulations. The report based its reservoir charge against the turkey on the fact that epidemics of the dis ease periodically break out in widely scattered turkey flocks. In all cases there was no way for the virus to get from an infected flock to an uninfected one. Exists in Unaffected -Flock Therefore, the virus must have existed in the uninfected flock all along. Then what caused the inactive virus sudden ly to become active and to start sickening and killing turkeys? That's the nice question about this virus disease science must answer somehow. But all virus disease are loaded with unan swered questions. The report was contined in a technical periodical circulated among physicians by the Ab bott Laboratories, North Chica go. The issue with the negative turkey report was labeled "spec ial Christmas edition." Reviewing all that is known scientifically about the virus, the report noted its strange be havior. There are avirulent that is, utterly harmless strains. These strains have been found in areas where the killing strains were infecting flocks. Is there an unknown mechanism which makes a harmless strain suddenly harmful? The disease causes few if any symptoms in older birds and its existence in turkeys often is not noticed "until cases occur in hu man contacts" of the birds. But younger birds show symptoms "their feathers become ruffled, they refuse food and become weak and emaciated before some of them finaljy die." Many of these seem to recover but they eliminate virus for long periods. Listed are more than 200 con struction plans and booklets on building that may be obtained free or at low cost from the OSC farm building plan service. The index covers a list of plans rang ing from salt boxes and water wheels to barns and community halls. Copies of the booklet, "Farm Buildings and Equipment," may be obtained from county exten sion service offices or the OSC bulletin clerk, Corvallis. BORDER CLASH REPORTED Tegucigalpa, Honduras (IP! Julian Zamora, deputy com mander of the military garrison at El Paraiso, was killed and a soldier was wounded seriously when a band of unidentified armed men shot up the town Tuesday night, it was reported today. El Paraiso is five miles from the Nicaraguan border and about 50 miles east of Teguci galpa. The area was the scene of skirmishes early this year when Honduras and Nicaragua were on the verge of war over an old boundary dispute. Sheriff's Deputies Apprehend Youth Apprehension of a 15-year-old Boise youth cleared up three burglaries in Jackson county recently, sheriff's officers said today. He and a companion, about 17, also from Boise, burglarized John's barber shop at 2911 Table Rock rd. Dec. broke into the Central Point school Dec. 7, and the Texaco service station across from the barbershop Dec. 5, officers said. The youth also told the of ficers the pair took some cloth ing from a cleaning establish ment at Bend, and committed five burglaries in Boise. WHERE'S DALLAS? New York (IP) A native Texan had his traditional Texas ego deflated Wednesday while Christmas shopping in crowded Macy's Department Store. He asked the saleslady to ship a gift package to Dallas. "What's that near?" she asked. Pensacola, Fla. (tP Fire men jumped on their trucks when the alarm sounded Wednes day but the trucks didn't go any where. When instructions came the firemen climbed sheepishly down and used a garden hose to put out a small trash fire behind the firehouse. CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN Atlanta OP) Detective C. A. Royal got something of a back handed compliment when ha donned a uniform and took his ailing wife's post at a school crossing here. "Oh, Mr. Royal," said a lady acquaintance, 'you look like a real policeman." TERMITES SPOIL HOLIDAY Hollywood (IP) Actress Peg gy Webber, her husband and their two small children will spend Christmas in a motel. They sold their house several days ago and were ready to move into an other home when it was found termites had moved in first. They couldn't move back to their old house, and the deal on the second one has been can celled. "And we're not going to find another house on such short notice,' 'she said. CANNON SALE COSTLY Chatham, England (TP) A lo cal court has fined a sergeant and two corporals for selling their regiment's brightly bur nished bronze ceremonial can nons weighing almost half a ton each. Police testified Sgt. Ernest Tucker and Corps. Ivor Davies and Raymond Redfern sold the Gordon Barracks cannons to a scrap dealers for $30. The court Wednesday fined Tucker $56 and the corporals $10 each. They said they were short of cash.
