Richard L. j N'euberger (D-Ore.) says he has i been advised private business interests would like to buy at least part of the pine timber on the Klamath Indian reservation. : Neuberger appeared Wednes day before the Legislative In-; terim Committee on Indian ; Problems. He said he was asked last ; month about the possibility of his support for sale of some four , billion board feet of pine timber, or part of the timber, to a com bination of private companies. He said he did not like the plan as well as he would federal pur chase of the reservation property. 0111 Introduced . Neuberger and Sen. Wayne j Morse (D-Ore.) have introduced j a bill calling for federal pur-' chase of the reservation after ; federal control ends In 1958. He said he thought the federal purchase bill had an "outside chance of passing the Senate" but wag not optimistic about Its chances In the house. Also appearing was Gov. Rob ert D. Qtfolmei and Rep. Edith Green (D-Ore.) Mrs. Green said she believed there wag only a "remote clince" the federal government would pay the appraised pur chase price. Neuberger suggested the state of Oregon might profitably issue bonds to purchase the timber. Rep. Sam Wilderman, a Re publican, said he doubted the Legislature would approve a $100 mfSion bond issue for it. Gov. Holmes gaid it might "if it's the right kind of a Legislature." Nuclear Plant in Alaska To Supply Power, Electricity Portland TCP) The Army said today it plans to proceed with construction of its first operat ing steam model nuclear power plant, to be located in Alaska as the answer to a difficult problem of supplying conventional fuel in a remote area. The Corps of Engineers Alas ka District Engineer at Anchor age will soon be instructed through Col. Allen F. Clark Jr., North Pacific Division Engineer in Portland, to proceed with necessary action to obtain the contract for building the plant at Fort Greeley, 60 miles south of Fairbanks on the Alaska highway. Available To Military The plant will generate both electricity and heat for the post and will be modeled after the prototype plant in operation at Fort Bel voir, Va. Power furnished by nuclear fuel will be - available to the military commander for the operation of motors, weapons and other equipment, even though normal supply lines should be disrupted by enemy action. One loading of nuclear fuel will operate the reactor for an extended period, while conven tional power plants require thousands of tons of fuel for a comparable period of operation. Congress has authorized a to tal expenditure of $6,675,000 for the project. The Fort Greely reactor will produce 42 million British ther mal units per hour in steam for space heating and about 1,700 kilowStlg) of electricity. o Well Mnown Chemist Succumbs at Eugene Eugene rtfl James C.
