Medford Woman Recalls Days
Of Yukon Gold Rush; Is 91
Mrs. Jessie Muir, 230V North
Bartlett street, Medford was
honored guest of Woman's Soc
iety of Christian Service, circle
No. 2, of First Methodist church,
Wednesday, December 4. The
occasion was Mrs. Muir's 91st
birthday.
Cake was served to the guests
at the home of Mrs. Chester
James, Willamette avenue. At
the party Mrs. L. G. Weaver
read an article prepared by Mr.
Weaver in Mrs. Muir's honor.
Mrs. Muir was born Decemb
er 4, 1866, in Bonaparte, Iowa,
where she lived until the 1890s
when she married Erastus Muir.
In 1898 she traveled with her
five-year-old son, Henry C. Muir
to Dawson City, Yukon, where
she joined her husband, an en
gineer at a mine.
Mrs. Muir recalls her days in
the Yukon living in a log cabin
with the temperature dipping to
72 degrees below zero. She re
members Klondike Kate and re
called writing a book of her
life in the Yukon which she
sent to her parents in Iowa.
Through the years the book was
lost.
The family moved to Heppner,
Ore., when they returned to
the United States where Mr.
Muir was a wheat farmer. They
also lived at Pendleton and En
terprise before moving to the
valley in 1926 when he retired.
Mr. Muir is a member of the
First Methodist church and en
joyed reading until a few years
ago but still likes flowers. She
lives alone at her North Bart
lett street home. Her son and
daughter-in-law live at 2440
South Stage road. She has nine

bodies in Medford will be held
on Monday, December 16th in
the Masonic temple at 8 p.m.
Past Illustrious Grand Master
Elton Waldron will act as in
stalling officer for Table Rock
council Royal and Select Mas
ters. He will be assisted by Com
panion John Pond as installing
marshall and Companion Glenn
Smith as installing chaplain.

ford will be held Thursday, De
cember 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the
Girls Community club, 229

meeting will be held, followed

ford club recently attended a
meeting of the Ashland club,
which the local group spon
sored. At the meeting officers
were elected for the new organi
zation. Members of the Ashland
club are invited to attend the
Medford group's Christmas
party.

Meet at Penthouse
For Holiday Party
Laden with gifts for their tra
ditional Christmas basket for a
needy family, registered nurses
of District 4, Oregon Nurses' as
sociation, braved the valley's
dense fog December 10 to at
tend a Christmas party at Rogue
Valley Memorial hospital's Pent
house. Huge holly arrangements, fig
urines of Santa Claus and carol
lers, a 3-foot striped candy cane
and a silver tipped fir tree decor
ated the room. Prizes were
awarded.
The festive buffet menu in
cluded the traditional Christmas
salads and cookies supplied by
15 hostesses. Mrs. Lois Beach
was chairman.
Guests were Mrs. Josephine
Wing, Mrs. Lora Billings, Mrs.
Barbara McKee and Mrs. Mary
Guy.
Daughters Elect
Term's Officers
Miss Patricia Hansen was
elected new queen of Bethel 55,
at International Order of Job's
Daughters, at the Tuesday meet
ing of the Job's Daughters. Also
elected were Miss Karalee Sel
by, senior princess; Miss Lynda
Knips, junior princess; Miss Bar
bara Gordon, guard; and Marcia
Burrell, marshal.
Plans were made for the Win
ter Fantasyball to be held at the
Rogue Valley Country club De
cember 20 for Bethels 14 and 55
and Medford Demoley members.
It was announced that a cookie
and candy sale would be held at
the Home Appliance store De
cember 18 from 4 until 9 p.m.
and that the Christmas tree sale,
conducted by the group, is in
progress. Tree may be purchased
at the Gordon residence, 418
South Oakdale avenue. A report
was given on the snow party
held last Sunday.
Roxy Ann court, Order of
Amaranth, Bethel 55's sponsor,
extended an invitation to the
group to attend a Christmas
party Thursday, December 19.
The Bethel will stage their cross
formation.
Ice from Wenham Lake in
Wenham, Mass., was exported to
Europe in the 19th century.

mas party Thursday, December
19, at the Knights of Pythias
hall at 7:30 p.m. An exchange

Christmas dinner December 11
at the Girls Community club.
Included at the dinner was a
surprise card and handkerchief
shower for Mrs. Carl Pearson
for her birthday. Following the
dinner cards were played.

Hugdahl, Mrs. Inlow, Mrs. Tom
Mee, and Mrs. Harvey Rowden.
Olive Rebekah lodge will
meet Monday, December 16, at
8 p.m. at the Odd Fellows hall.
