Sputnik Headdresses Win Prizes at League Dance The influence of recent ev ents was evident at the annual formal ball of Medford Junior Service league Friday night at Rogue Valley Country club. Wo men traditionally wear fancy headdresses to the ball, both Ghe first prize and one of the honoirgble mention winners were in the Sputnik theme. Mrs. John Raapke's headdress was judged best. She wore a around whicn a mue saieune circulated when she pressed a switch carried in her hand, and the contraption gave off a steady beep-beep-beep sound. The head gear was designed and made by her husband. Last year he had made a ski scene for Mrs. Raapke which caused much comment. The headdress which Mrs. T. W. McFadden wore was a small metal globe of the world around which circulated a little lighted satellite. This also had been made by the wearer's husband. Also winning honorable men tion was the headdress worn by Mrs. David Fortmiller, Ash land. It was a tall silver frame q heavily ornamented with large red Christmas balls which matched her red gown. League members and their guests generally agreed that this year's headdresses surpassed those of past years both in in genuity and beauty. Miss Joyce Bearden, who will be married soon to Dom Provost Jr., of Ashland, wore a three-tier wed ding cake on her head. It had been made from cardboard and decorated by her father, Percy Bearden. Her evening gown was also red. Mrs. J. D. McCann wore a large gold colored Christmas bell on her head, topped with a red ribbon bow which match ed her red gown. Mrs. Richard Schwahn's head dress was a snow man which accented her blue lace evening frock and Mrs. W. F. Cowning also wore a large globe head dress, but she had decorated hers with Christmas glitter, stars and a design which indi cated its theme "Around the World in Eighty Days." Mrs. Jack Worthington wore a wide hatotopped by a little Christmas tree and a music box which played "Silent Night." Mrs. Carl Wimberley's head dress was the face of a clock and the slogan encircling it read "Party Time." Buffington, wore a headdress of holly, and Mrs. J. P. Rowan's headdress was a holly wreath with a bird nest tucked among the leaves. Mrs. N. J. Wilson wore a tiny little fir Christmas tree elabor ately decorated. If Mrs. Ray L. Casterline had not been a league member, her headdress would doubtless have won a prize. The base was a large square of plastice foam which held a tiny living room scene with fireplace, mother and father, baby bed and other ornaments. The center, or crown, of the headdress was a swirl of pink angel hair denot ing heaven on which were plac ed five tiny baby figurines, a miniature stork and a little Sputnik. On the base, opposite to the living room scene, was placed a miniature baby chair with a sign which read "Wei come, 1958." This cleaver crea tion, the work of Mrs. John Clarke, baby-sitter for Dr. and Mrs. Casterline and their, five children, was a pictorial an nouncement that the family ex pects the sixth child soon. The wife of another Medford physician, Mrs. Malcolm Byers, also wore a family headdress This one held a figurine repre senting Dr. Byers, three little angel figurines representing their three daughters and two little sprites indicating their two sons. About 250 attended the din- with a cocktail hour. Mrs. Jack Ingram was general chairman, and Mrs. M. D. McGeary was chairman of the headdress con test. Christmas Party Held by Women Monday at Hotel Scottish Rite Women's club held the annual Christmas party in the banquet room at the Med ford hotel Monday noon. The luncheon tables were dec orated with sleighs filled with brightly colored packages, Christmas bell clusters, and snow-flocked fir boughs. At one end of the room was a brilliantly lighted Christmas tree. The president, Mrs. George D. Osier, opened the luncheon with the singing of the Doxology. Mrs. Osier introduced Mrs. Bren Starcher, Mrs. Frank L. Rauch, Mrs. John P. Dickson and Mrs. Arthur L. Hadley, Denver, Colo., as guests of the club. Mrs. Had ley had belonged to the club many years before she moved to Denver. Santa's helpers, Mrs. Herbert L. Alford, Mrs. Frank Salyers and Mrs. Howard C. Goldsmith, distributed gifts to the members. Christmas carols were led by Mrs. Harry F. Nordwick, with Mrs. Clarence Pankey as accom panist. Greeters were Mrs. Edward C. Root and Mrs. Lee L. Stone. Cards were played during the afternoon, with the high bridge score going to Mrs. Goldsmith, and the canasta high score to Mrs. Hazel Dickson. Another award was given Mrs. Alva M. Perkins. Mrs. Nordwick was general chairman for the affair. Decora tions were done by Mrs. Charles F. Hoppe, Mrs. Goldsmith and Mrs. Verl G. Walker. The tele phone committee was Mrs. Ralph Lue, Mrs. Root, Mrs. Verna Mc Callister, and Mrs. Lloyd L. Canton. The next meeting of the club will be January 13 with Mrs. McCallister as chairman. On Tuesday, in the Scottish Rite Temple in Portland, Victor E. Vieira and Ralph T. Moore, Grants Pass, and Lloyd E. Ham lin, Medford, received the rank and decoration of knight com mander of the Court of Honor. Members were elected to receive this honor by the Supreme Coun cil of the Scottish Rite at a meet ing in Washington, D. C., last October, and the group is repre sentative of all Scottish Rite bodies throughout the state. Scottish Rite Masons will meet in the Masonic temple at 8 p.m. Monday, December 23, for a stated meeting in the council and a stated meeting in the con sistory. There will be election and installation of officers in the consistory. Central Point Circles To Package Treats Central Point Women's Christian circle and the Faith circle of the Central Point First Presbyterian church will meet Thursday, December 19, to pack age the Christmas treats for the Christmas program to be given at the Church December 22. Dr. and Mrs. Clair Dinner Meeting Held in Prospect Prospec t The December meeting and Christmas party of Prospect Home Extension unit were held Wednesday, Decem ber 11. A ham luncheon was served and gifts exchanged. Mrs. Ralph Goode was chairman for the dinner and her committee consisted of Mrs. Ward Blaine, Mrs. Jack Reinks, and Mrs. Paul R. First Methodist church. Dr. George G. Roseberry performed the rites at 8 o'clock in the evening. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Mary C. Ross. Route 2, Box 445, Medford, and Dr. Vogel's mother is Mrs. Arretta Vogel, 607 West Main street. The bride wore a white lace ballerina length gown and car ried orchids and w:hite carna tions. Dr. and Mrs. Vogel traveled to San Francisco for their honey moon, the bride wearing . a brown sheath dress with brown alligator leather purse and shoes and pink coat. Mrs. Vogel is a graduate of Talent High school. Dr. Vogel attended Laurelwood academy, Southern Oregon college and Washington State college and received his degree from Los Angeles College of Optometry. The newlyweds will live at 320 North Barneburg road.
