c n i I O o TWELVE MEDFOBD (OMCOF) MAIL TRI3UNE Friday, December 13, 1957 San Francisco Hoop Squad Boasts Depth, Experience (This is another in series on the outlook of Wst Coast basketball teams.) By SCOTT BAILLIE San Francisco 'IP The Uni versity of San Francisco Dons, lo4ed with experience and bol stered by a deeper bench than last season's Oi'CAA title con tenders, look like a sure-fire tournament hotshots again this year. O But don't say that to Coach Phil Woolpert, who refuses to look ahead to next March and the college classic. "There are too many rivers to cross," says the thin man who haj directed the Dons to a pair of JCCAA titles and the semi finals in the last three cam paigns. He agrees, however, that the team is further along at this early point in the season than was last year's squad at the same time. All are case-hardened sen iors with the exception of Day, a junior. Add to this group the so-called "Fabulous Freddie" Lacour and you have quite a ball club. La cour, a sensation at St. Ignatius High school, averaged 19.4 points per game last season for the USF Frosh. -He stands 6-5 and has a fine assortment of shots. He can play forward or guard. . The only trouble is that La cour appears to have been press ing a little in his early outings with the varsity but Woolpert is certain he will loosen up. Other veterans on hand are Bill Mallen, who is a sturdy vet eran of the Bill Russell-K.C. Jones era, guard Dave Lillevand who is a top rebounder although "only" 5-10, guard Bob Radano vich who steadily improved as a soph last year and Charles Rus sell, Bill's brother. First Five Experienced The starting five is loaded with power as well as experience Many consider Farmer the best defensive man in the nation. Others hail all-around Gene Brown who made the NCAA all tournament team in March. Day, who can hook shot with either hand, learned defense the hard way last year as the team went into a slump after posting a rec ord of 60 straight wins. And when things got a little bleak, they still had Dunbar to give them that lift in his natural role as a floor leader. All in all, USF figures to be just as rugged as ever. And an other appearance in the NCAA tourney seems more than likely. Dodson Takes Ashland Shoot Ashland Jim Dodson, Prine ville, was victor last week end in the Ashland Gun club's sixth annual small bore rifle tourney. Dodson and Archie Haskins, Ashland, each fired 774 but Dod son had the better accuracy in the standing position. Clinton Charlie, Ashland was third with 772. Ashland Gun club won the team shoot with 3048 and Rose VanBuskirk, Ashland, was high lady with 763. Mike Mills, Yreka, Calif., was high junior with 734 and Ruth Wyant, Ashland, high girl with 718. Ashland with 2791 was junior team winner. Bill Jones, Roseburg, won the prone match with 200-3x, Has kins the sitting event with 200 and the kneeling with 196 and Charley was standing victor with 184. Eugene (IP) Preference ticket buying for the Rose Bowl game will end Saturday, Oregon offi cials said today. All persons de siring tickets were urged to mail their orders immediately. Athletic Director Leo Harris said the general public classifi cation is still open. He said "we .are still confident we can offer tickets to any person in the state of Oregon who desires them." Tickets are priced at $5.50. Orders should be sent to the athletic department at the uni versity. No over the counter sales will be made. COWBOYS SLATE 10 Laramie, Wyo. HP) University of Wyoming announced today it will play a 10-game schedule during its 1958 football season with intersectional battles in cluding Kansas State and Oregon State. Barnstorm Clubs Wow Hoop Fans Just as entertaining as ever. That's the Harlem Clowns, mirthful magicians of the maple court who appeared on a Med ford floor last night for the first time in three seasons. The Clowns displayed their comedy and basketball and skill j while the House of David quint, which has plenty of talent itself, played straightmen before a sizable crowd last night at Hed rick Junior High school gym. The gym was not full but the crowd was large considering the fog. Score, if you're interested it was really just a side issue was 77 to 71. It favored the Har lemites. The Clowns, seldom very far ahead of the Davids, established their lead for keeps in the open ing period and concentrated on their amusing capers and banter throughout the "contest." They provided both amusement and an exhibition of skill from the start, going into a magic circle of fancy and intricate passing right after the introductions. Woods Leads Comedy Bob Woods, a 6-3 eager with twinkling eyes and grinning teeth, was both the comedy lead er and the main point maker for the game. Along with his clever faking, pivoting, passing and cutting up under the hoop, he poured in 44 of the Harlem ites points, frequently dunking the ball. Woods was one Clown who couldn't wait to be introduced. Action sometimes ha.l to be held up while he came down the floor to take his position. Once, when a shot did not go in, Woods jumped, grabbed the ring and pulled himself up to see why. Another time, when a foul was called on him he threw the ball out into the hall. Fred Pearson of the colored team gave an exhibition of the art of dribbling the ball. One of the bearded Davids managed to swipe it from him but Pearson stole it right back. Uncanny Ability The Clowns showed they are used to anything. When, during their "baseball game" the ball was batted into the balcony and a youthful spectator was hesi tant to return it, they simply sat down and waited. Uncanny ability to pass the ball around and to work or weave it in for shots was shown by the Clowns who passed up a number of good opportunities to score just to provide another chance to cut-up or. show their skill. The Davids played a gen erally alert tussle, being quick to take advantage of chances to put the ball in the hoop. Ron Gould was tops in the scoring for the Davids with 16 counters. They said they saw no problems in com pleting a nine-game, schedule even without a conference tieup.
