Family Council Mr. K. D. We want the boys to go to separate colleges. John D. But we like being together! Mr. K. D. I am the father of four teenage children. My old est son has just started college and the next one is planning to start next year. Now the oldest boy happens to be a very brilliant student. He has amazed us all with the record he has made. Of course, were very proud of him, but we're concerned about his younger brother, Johnny, a just average student who has never gotten much attention outside the home. My wife and I had made up our minds that Johnny should go to a different college. But both boys amazed us by protest ing that they wanted to be to gether. We are pleased they should be so fond of one another, but it doesn't seem fair to Johnny. John D. It's nice to know that your parents are so con cerned about your ego, but mine just doesn't happen to be as ten der as they think. Floyd is smarter than almost everyone at school, so why should I worry about his being smarter than I? The boy's a genius, that's all and I'm proud to be his brother. As a matter of fact, Floyd has always been a great help in coaching me in some of my weaker subjects and I'll be glad to have him around. It happens that I can also be very useful to Floyd. When I am around, he always has a better time double dating. He says I am the best conversation filler-inner in the world. I know Floyd and I would really miss one another if we went to different schools. The Council: Mr. and Mrs. K. D. may well be proud that their boys have found so satisfactory relationship. They are prob ably right, however, in feeling that their boys would be better off going to separate schools. It is not merely a matter of fairness to Johnny. Floyd also needs the opportunity to stand without his brother. Johnny mentions Floyd's social depend ence, but it is possible that he needs his younger brother in many other ways. It is also pos sible that Johnny bathes a little too much in the light of his im pressive brother. It is fine for him to feel this pride in Floyd, but he should have the exper ience of getting a little glory en tirely on his own. The big advantage to young persons in going away to college is that they get the opportuni ty to break out of old family patterns and to test themselves in the larger world outside of the home. In the case of close brothers, like Floyd and Johnny, their going away to school to gether is like an atteampt to learn to swim while wearing a life belt. They may go through the gestures of swimming, but they must still face the exper ience of plunging into the water entirely on their own. ( COPYRIGHT 1957, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.)
