The latter committee is headed by Eugene Orr, Medford merchant. SA. Grange committee led by Hoover veiled e Camp White Domiciliary Friday morning and made its recommendation to the executive committee of the Grange following the tour. The Grange executive commit tee will send a letter to the state Pomona Grange urging a resolution from it. Another let ter will be directed to Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) asking him to push for full utilization of the Camp White facilities. Written to Morse Orr said the American Legion and other veterans groups in the county have already written Sen. Morse and Morse has written the Veterans administration in Wash ington, D. C. In addition, Orr said he has visited the nation's capitol five times requesting Camp White be converted to veterans hospital. He said he hopes the Grange effortowill be a signal for other groups to join in the request. , Following questions of officials at the Domiciliary Friday it was revealed an estimated 475 more beds could be placed in five buildings. The Domiciliary now has 860 members occupying pre sent equipped facilities. Official Name Harold Jaffrey, assistant man ager of the Domiciliary, said if a veterans hospital is made from present unused facilities Camp White will be called officially a veterans administration center since it will combine the facili ties of both a domiciliary and hospUal.Now there -are,:14. s'jxfi places in tne united Mates. - . K. Ricker, domiciliary man ager, said thifc is the only vet erans domiciliary west of the Mississippi. It is also the largest of the three in the United States. One is located at Thomasville, Ga., and another at Clinton, Iowa. A tour of the Camp White faci lities and questioning of staff members revealed few additions would be necessary for handling a veterans hospital outside of adding beds and corresponding equipment. Sewer, Water Lines A sewer line is already in which could serve a population of 35,000. A 12-inch stand pipe was added two years ago when the new Medford pipeline was in stalled. This would provide more than enough water for a veterans hospital, according to Bert Sims, chief engineer. During the war Camp White was housing 1,750 people when it was an Army and Navy base, Sims pointed out. Power and heating facilities would also be more than adquate, he said. With sprinklers in every room, including the bathrooms, of ficials feel all the buildings are (properly protected against fire. In addition, Camp White is served by its own fire depart ment equipped with two 750 gal lon capacity pumper trucks. Miss Gladys McCracken, chief dietician, estimated it would take an hour to feed 880 people in the dining room. With the REBEL GUNS SEIZED Customs agent C. C. Addition of a hospital or ap proximately 50ft more people to serve would require about two-thirds more food, Miss Mc Cracken and Don Pulley, chief cook estimated. Approximately 20 more employees would be needed in the kitchen to serve the added group of patients. Post Exchange The domiciliary is now equip ped with a post exchange, coffee shop, bowling alley and a large theater. The theater was expand ed in November increasing the size of the stage from 16 by 16 feet to 36 by 24 feet. This was financed from "general post funds." Jaffrey said. These are funds provided by donation and money left by members who die' leaving no dependents or family to will their money to, he ex plained. The ball park was fi nanced from the same source, he said. George E. Heller, national field representative for the American Legion, made a visit to the Camp White facilities recent ly on request of the local Amer ican Legion post. In his report to the National Field Service he recommended that "the veterans administration establish a 400 bed hospital at the VA domicili ary, Camp White, with 300 beds to be used for chronic conditions and 100 beds for general medical and surgical conditions. If this is accomplished it will relieve the chronic bed situation in a large western area." Veterans On Waiting List "During my visit here, I read a news item in the local paper that Administrator Higley, while attending a convention in Flor ida, made the statement that be tween 16,000 and 17,000 veterans are on the waiting list for medical attention, which is giving the vet erans administration much con cern. He stated also this situation was caused by the shortage of trained, personnel,., . "Nearby Medford" is considered a medical center for a large area, and has five medical clinics, hos pitals, and a new hospital being planned. I am informed, and I believe reliably, that personnel sufficient to man the hospital can be secured without difficulty as soon as funds are made available." Coming tain An IXCITINC MIW Dairy Product Iran DAIiYLANDl Man Decides to Make Vood Turning Work South Burlington, Vt. (IP) Glen Woodbury has given up dairy products and turned to wood. After eight years of butter and cheese-making, the fascin ation of wood-turning caught up with him, and he decided to try earning a living at it. 1 Now, 15 years later, he owns a fully-equipped, two-story wood turning shop. He sells his pro ducts to approximately 500 de partment stores and gift shops in the United States and Canada. "My biggest problem," Wood bury said, "is finding real good wood. Exotic woods like teak and mahogany are so high that I use them only on special ord ers." , Most of his wood birch, maple, cherry and butternut comes from Vermont. But even native woods of fine quality are hard to find. "It takes a big tree to make a block 14 inches across and four and one-half inches deep," Woodbury explained . "The wood must be free of cracks, knots and blemishes of any sort." He estimates that half of the rough wood coming into his shop ends up as firewood for his two kilns. A barren-ground caribou car ries his sustaining food with him all winter. A solid slab of tallow, often six inches thick at the rump, is used by the caribou for energy throughout the winter and often is used up by spring.
