O O c G Try and Stop Me -By BENNETT CERF- A HOLLYWOOD PRODUCER and an author, imported at staggering expense, had been at loggerheads ever since their picture had gone into the shooting stage, but one fight came along that was just too much for the writer to bear. "I quit," he announced, nd grabbed the next plane for New York. "That settles It," roared the producer in a rage. "This is positively the last picture I make with au thors!" A magazine movie critic be lieve in tempering his ad verse reports with mercy. Of a. certain siren, for instance, he noted, "She is intolerable. tut that is her only fault. A country Journalist had a sign over his desk that read "Obituary Editor." In due course, his son took over the post with the sign changed to "Son of Obituary Editor." C 1957, by Bennett Crf. Distributed by Kinf Features Syndicate. The Hollywood Scene By VERXON SCOTT United Press Writer Hollywood TP) You can tell Tommy Sands, Elvis and the rest of the ducktail crowd to move over for an old timer. Dick Powell is making a singing comback. Powell is one star who's happy his old movies have been revived on TV despite the fact that televiewers think it's his son. Thanks to such nuggets as "Golddiggers of 1933," "42nd Street" and 'Flirtation Walk," Powell has been pestered to tune up his pipes for another shot at crooning. Not content with being a producer-director at 20th Century Fox, a TV tycoon (Four-Star Films) and an actor ("Zane Grey Theater"), Powell has signed a contract with Verve Records to warble an album of oldies. Money Insignificant He needs the money like Yul Brynner needs dandruff. So how come? T want to see if I can still sing," Dick claims. "Of all the things I've attempt ed in my life I was never suc cessful at making records or singing in night clubs. I want to do both. "When I began my singing ca reer there were only two croon ers round me and BIng Cros by. Now there are a million of them." From 1931 to 1942 Powell made 35 musicals as a "pretty boy" singer. In 1935 he was one of the 10 top money-making tars. But by 1945 his star was setting slowly in the west, like the last scenes in some of his 'movies. . jfo Career Launched Then he clipped his curly hair nd became a hardboiled detec tive in "Murder, My Sweet," nd a new career in dramatic pictures. "Now I'm right back where I jtarted, singing," he says. "My voice is a little lower than it flsed .to be, and I haven't much chance to practice just in the jar to and from the office. Guys -In other cars look at me as if I'm crazy when I hit a high note." Dick blinked happily when a waitress in the Fox commissary brought him a slice of cake with a single candle sputtering from it. "It's my birthday (his 53rd),w he grinned. "I didn't think any one would remember. Musicals Too Expensive Powell recently completed di recting "The Enemy Below," a tense Navy drama. Asked why he doesn't tackle a musical, he said "They're too expensive." "One production scene today costs more than an entire pic ture did when I was making them," Powell said. "Musicals used to be the big money-makers, especially in Europe. Now people won't stand still for them. "They had to take the songs out of 'The King and I in Eu rope before audiences would go into the theaters. "But I can't complain about my old musicals on TV," Powell said. "They're responsible for my second chance at a singing career." Officials Demand Happy Camp Wafer Pipe Be Returned Happy Camp Civil Defense officials are demanding return of emergency aluminum water pipe loaned to the California community during floods last spring. A deadline of Nov. 30 has been set, Civil Defense Offi cial Rex Riley said. Riley told county supervisors during a meeting Tuesday that he had been informed by the Civil Defense office in Sacra mento, Calif., that the Happy Camp Water association must ar range to have its own pipeline within the next 30 days before any extensions can be granted on the pipe loan. Supported by Stale Riley was supported by a state public health department representative.. He said that the California town has been in a continuous state of emergency "ever since I can rerall." Riley told the county officials that the situation has existed since the floods last spring and loan of the pipe has been ex tended four times. He said that school officials had informed him removal of the pipe would force closure of the school. In other action," supervisors passed a resolution approving a proposed freeway route between Weed and Cougar designed to eliminate several dangerous curves. They also approved a policy change to allow reim bursement of Airport Coordina tor E. A. Christensen for work performed. The supervisors also voted to oppose an application filed with the Civil Aeronautics administration by South West Airways for discontinuing air line service at Montague airport. I want to go out with an older man. Mrs. R. B. She could have her head turned. Ann B. I am a 17-year-old girl and quite mature for my age. Everyone takes me for at least 20. My problem is I don't like to go out with boys of my own age or only a little older. I find I start acting just as silly with them as they usually act. A man of 26 is very much in terested in me and I have gone out with him a few times. I en joy it so much because he makes me feel like a real lady. He is really wonderful so intelligent and already successful in his field. My mother wants me to stop going out with him because she says he is too old. Is 26 really too old for me? Mrs. R. B. I understand how Ann feels because I felt the same way at her age. Because I understand, I realize how easily she could have her head turned by an older man. Ann is mature in some ways, but in others she is still only a little girl. I want her to go to college and to grow up a bit be fore considering marriage. It is very flattering for her to have this man so interested and I'm afraid she could easily be per suaded marriage is what she wants right now. All of Ann's friends go out with boys of 18, 19 or 20 at the most. These boys are very nice and Ann shouldn't spurn- them. The Council: Mrs. R. Because of their minute size and the tremendous speed of their journey, the meteors are burned up between 50 and 80 miles above the earth's surface. Collisions with atmospheric mol ecules heat the meteors to white hot temperatures, leaving be hind an ionized trail of disas sociated air and meteor atoms. These meteor trails have been found to be the basis for ex tending the range of very high frequency radio communication further around the earth's cur vature. Research engineers have de veloped an experimental tech nique for playing ball with the radio waves, using meteor trails as a backboard for bouncing VHF-transmitted messages back to earth from as far as 1,400 miles away from the point of first transmission. The new method increases the range for VHF frequencies two and one-half times. The reflect ed signal is unaffected by sun spots and magnetic disturbance?. It would be best if Ann could be persuaded to see for herself that the man of 26 is a bit too old for her. Perhaps she would be willing to sacrifice the bet ter times she enjoys with him for her own ultimate good. If she cannot see the correctness of her mother's point of view, Mrs. R. B. should try not to make an issue of it, but simply to control the number of dates ' she was with this man. Cetrainly Ann should also be seeing boys in her own age group at the same time. Most of them may suffer by comparison, but if she is encouraged to dis cuss her friends and her dates at home, she can be brought to see the desirable traits beneath the rough exteriors of the younger boys. She may sudden ly find that her style is a bit cramped when she plays "a real lady" to a man of 26. Copyright 1957, General Features Corp.)
