November 24, 1957 Children's Outgrown Clothing Specialty of New York Shop By GAY PAULEY United Press Correspondent New York (IF This week in Manhattan: One New York socialite pro vided some assistance to the long suffering parent watching junior sprout right out of a perfectly jrood suit or coat. Mrs. Sayre MacLeod, whose son always did just that, opened a clearing house for out-grown but not out worn children's clothes. Other women run shops to give adult clothing a second run, but Mrs. MacLeod said her "sec ond act" is the only one of its kind in New York and she be lieves one of the few in the na tion. "The whole idea came to me when a friend gave me a jacket for my son," said Mrs. MacLeod. "It didn't fit, and I got to think ing, what CAN a parent do? Children's clothes cost a fortune and you hate to discard a perfectly-good garment." When Sayre, her 14-year-old son, went away to prep school, Mrs. MacLeod went into busi ness. "I'm Just not one of those women to sit around moping," said Mrs. MacLeod. Her husband is an insurance company official and away from home frequently. "Well," she said, "I wanted something to keep me busy. This does." All clothes for re-sale must be in A-l condition. Her "take" is 40 per cent of the re-sqle price; the rest goes to the consigner. Sizes run from tots to teens. "For girls, I suppose party dresses are the number one item," she said. "Boys? Well, overcoats, best blue suits "and ice skates." One customer wandered in and within half-an-hour had se lected 17 winter coats with matching hats and leggings. "I thought, what a family she's got," said Mrs. MacLeod. "But she was only mailing them to her nieces in various parts of the country." Fashion's prpduced the serv iceable house dress and the glamorous at-home wear. Now Winter Fashions Have Golden Look BY UNITED PRESS Fashion has a golden glow this winter. Luxurious gold brocade is seen in evening dresses. Lame is used for short-sleeved din ner or cocktail gowns and tail ored theater suit. At-home wear includes gold lame pajamas. Knitted 'dresses also come in gold lame, including one in a cotton-back knit with gold specks. Two movies helped add an in ternational look to fashion. De signer Hannah Troy shows waist-deep kimono sleeves in spired by "Sayonara." ' The sleeves come in bloused sheaths in cashmere, silk print and black silk crepe. "Around the World in 80 Days" is the film , behind petticoat styles with a foreign touch. One group comes in paisley-printed harem shapes. Another group features ruffled nylon petticoats with 80 yards of fabric. , Fur goes to small-fry fashions this winter. The under-10 set in wear a pale blue velvet dress with neckline and puffed, sleeves trimmed in white ermine. comes an in-between costume designed both for cooking and hostessing. David Crystal company will market them early in January All are in cotton, so that spills won't matter. Most are in bold colors and feature the apron as an integral part of the design, so hostess can whip it off when guests are ready to dine. A spokesman for the manufacturer said the new line "definitely is not for the woman who's going to slave for hours over a hot stove. They're more for the su kiyaki type cook . . . the girl with a terrace or penthouse." New proof the race is growing taller: The Museum of the City of New York this week opened an exhibit of fashions through 250 years. But in its review, live models displayed clothes for only the last 57 years. "We couldn't find any models small enough for the earlier gowns," 'said Ruth McAneny Loud. "Only a 12-year-old girl could fit into those 18th and 19th Century things." Energy Sauer "Storing lightweight house wares and dishes in the highest and lowest areas- of kitchen cabinets is an energy -saver homemakers should consider," says Margaret Spader, home service editor of the Gas Appli ance Manufacturers association. Designer Says Homelike Decor Bad for Cafes Chicago HPi Restaurateurs who concentrate on the hack neyed "mom's kitchen" decor for their establishments, are go ing to lose many a customer who craves the "different" or "ex citing. A leading industrial designer has concluded that the typical restaurant patron is becoming less and less interested in "just a home-cooked meal." Designer Ken White thinks a deep-seated need to "get away from it all" sparks the average invitation, of "let's go out to din ner." Therefore restaurant interiors should follow the trend of trans porting the patron through time and space away from "mom's kitchen," and into a world that is glamorous and different, White said. In years to come, White pre dicted, the family conversation about where to go for dinner may - run something like this: Dad will cast his vote for the hearty, robust atmosphere of "Ye Olde Pub," Mom for the "George Washington Supped Here," Sis for the "Very Very Victorian Room," and Junior for the "Trad er Horn's Exotic Tahitian Hide away."
