While most costs continue to soar, price tags on the tradi tional Thanksgiving turkey will be 18 to 20 cents a pound less for oven-ready birds than 10 years ago, Noel Bennion, Oregon State college poultry specialist, reports. This year's big crop of low cost turkeys comes at a time when average wages are at an alltime high. This puts the high pro'.ein, low-fat holiday meat within the price range of every one, says the specialist. Mr. Bennion points out, for example, that in 1947 the aver age factory worker in this country had to work 29 minutes to earn the price of one pound of turkey this year it requires only 12 minutes work. The com parison is based on U.S. depart ment of labor reports of $1.24 average factory wages in 1947, against $2.08 this year. Also in 1947, oven-ready turkeys cost 60 cents a pound compared to 42 cents average in 1957. Bennion attributes the low cost meat to three things: an unusually large supply of birds, efficiency of production, and automation in processing. Bene fits of all three are being passed on to the food shopper this Thanksgiving, he adds. Pickle Eating Facts Said Astronomical Chicago (Ut The National Pickle Packers' association has some astronomical gastronomical statistics about America's pickle eating habits. "Americans eat 114 per cent more pickles today than 20 years ago. In 1930, the association said, we devoured pickles in the an nual proportion of 2.34 pints per person. Today 'the average is five pints. The 1930 national population of 122,775,046 men, women and children gobbled its way through 28,712,400 pints of pickles sweets, sours, dills, gherkins every kind purchasable. With the 1956 pickle con sumption figures just in, it is obvious that 26 years makes a difference in eating habits. Last year's population was 166,000,000, and the pickles con sumed totaled 829,312,000. Home Rites Wed Couple Central Point Miss Betty Jo McCann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al McCann, Route 1, Box 572, Central Point beame the bride of Paul George Juveland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Juveland, 585 Bush street, Cen tral Point, in a home ceremony Wednesday, November 6, at eight o'clock in the evening. Officiating at the ceremony was Clynton Crisman, pastor of Medford Friends church. Twenty relatives and friends attended the wedding and reception which followed at the McCann hame in Central Point. Given in marriage by her fa ther, the bride wore a pink satin frock and carried white orchids on a white Bible. Mrs. Albert L. McCann attend ed her sister-in-law. She wore a pale blue dress with a corsage of pink carnations. Albert L. McCann served as best man. The bride attended Crater High 'school and is employed by the First. National Bank of Port land, Central Point branch. The bridegroom attended Crater High school and Is a student at Southern Oregon college. Hawaiian Sandwich Good For Breakfast Sandwiches no longer are re stricted to the lunchbox. And, versatile as they are, there's no reason why they should be. Here's a sandwich that's a nat ural for breakfast time. To make" fried Hawaiian . sand wiches, mix Vi cup mashed ripe banana, 1 3-ounce package cream cheese, 1 cup crushed pineapple, drained (9-ounce can), and cup chopped pecans. Combine Vi cup milk, 1 egg, beaten, and a dash of salt in a shallow dish. Spread banana mixture on 4 slices enriched bread. Cut each sandwich in half diagonally. Dip each side of sandwich into egg mixture and brown quickly on both sifles in V4 cup butter or margarine in skillet. Serve hot. It was later discontinued in 1910 by act of the legislature. and not re-established at its pres ent site until 1926. Active in civ ic and social affairs, Mrs. Beeson is presently coordinating ..plans with Hugh G. Simpson, director of alumni affairs, for an alumni room at SOC which will feature displays of old time pictures, class flags, and other mementos of historical interest and value Airs. Maynard Paup Hostess for Meeting The last meeting of Xi Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi was held at the home of Mrs. May nard Paup, November 20. Co hostess for the evening was Mrs. Everett Ballard. Members were reminded of the rummage rale to be held at the Fehl building December 7. Plans were made for remember ing children at the Fairview home in Salem for the month of November and December. The next meeting was sched uled for December 2 at the home of Mrs. Donald Lue, 341 O'Gara avenue. After the meeting, bowl ing has been planned for the evening. The program for the last meeting was given by Mrs. J. B Austin on "Folk Dancing."
