Carl Pike, on leave from the Kent county, Mich, sheriffs department, displays a safety banner with a student of one of the schools he has visited with his "Safety Magic" show. Sergeant Pike will demon strate his safety-teaching techniques before pupils of Med ford High school from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. tomorrow. The special assembly demonstration is sponsored by the Ameri can Trucking association, and the Oregon Trucking associa tions. The Medford police department is co-sponsor for the performance. Auxiliary Members At Annual School Mrs. Earl Bialow and Mrs. W. H. Sutter were in Portland Saturday to attend the annual school of instruction of the Orev gon Department of the American Legion auxiliary. The meetings were held at the Imperial hotel, and were attended by the state chairmen and officers of the or ganization. Mrs. Anson Ingels of Salem, state president of the American Legion Auxiliary, presided at the meetings. Dentists, Wives Attend Meeting Dr. and Mrs. Frank C. Roberts, Dr. and Mrs, Norman T. Capsey, Dr. and Mrs. William H. Roberts, Dr. and Mrs. Bert L. Lageson, nd Dr. and Mrs. Richard Ferd rick attended a dental meeting at (ie Eugene Hotel November 16. The Eugene Dental association embers were hosts for the af fair. Chief speaker was Dr. Donald Keyes of the University ( Nebraska College of Denistry. Miss Esther Quinn Honored at Party Talent Primary department Sunday school teachers at Tal ent Methodist church held a birthday party, Tuesday, Novem ber 19, honoring Miss Esther Quinn. The party, held at the Quinn home, was attended by eleven guests. Guests included Miss Marie Furrer, Mrs. Ivan Olson, Mrs. Oscar Johnson, Mrs. George Conner, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Quinn, Mrs. Lee Quinn, and chil dren, Janet and Don Lee, Miss Alice May Woolley, pastor of the church, and the honored guest. 4 Class Announced In Square Dancing Kenneth Hood, local square dance caller, will teach a basic course in square dancing to begin Friday, November 22, at 8 p.m. Anyone interested in learning to square dance is invited to join the class which will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Dallaire, 1060 Crater Lake avenue. VFW Auxiliary Has Initiation; Events Planned Shady Cove Mrs. Lloyd Har ris of Shady Cove was initiated by the Ladies' auxiliary to Post 6831, Vetrans of Foreign Wars, November 15. A letter was received from the auxiliaries adopted son, Tommy Tempson. His address is Veterans Hospital, Ward 18, Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. Gene House announced that the bloodmobile would be in Shady Cove December 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the VFW Post home. Coffee and doughnuts will be served by the Ladies' auxili ary. Blood is urgently needed. Mrs. Jim Cassal gave a report on her last visit to Camp White. She" distributed fruit baskets to be decorated for Christmas. They will be filled and given to the members of the Domiciliary. Mrs. House also announced that Cub Scouts will have a pack meeting November 25 at the school house. Parents are invited to attend. The post and auxiliary will participate in the PTA variety show to be held Saturday night, November 23. The '"Secret Pal" revelation party will be held in February instead of Christmas week as in the past. All members having secret pals will be contacted as to the date. Refreshments were served by Mrs. House. During the past fiscal year 76,776 books were checked out for home reading by children; 1994 new borrowers were regis tered, a gain of 50 per cent over the previous year's total junior registration of 4269. The cur rent registration figure is well over 6200. On July 1, 1957 there were 13,288 books in the junior department, and 689 more had been added by the first of No vember. An additional thousand have been rebound to look as bright as new during the past year. Arranged by Subject Books in the junior depart ment are arranged by subject for the most part, using the same Dewey decimal classification that is used in the adult section. There are sections on science, religion, music and art, sports and games, poetry and plays, travel, biography, history, fic tion, fairy tales, etc. For the very young there is an alcove of bright picture books which they may have read to them or learn to enjoy by themselves while they are in the primary grades. There are also current copies of children's magazines, including American Girl, Boys Life, .Child Life, Children's Ac tivities, Highlights for Children, the Horn Book, and Jack and Jill. The junior department of the library, is a colorful, inviting place. It's a free service to resi dents of Medford and Jackson county; and during National Children's Book Week, Nov. 17 23, all boys and girls and their parents are especially invited to take advantage of this delight ful place where excitement, ad venture, and knowledge beckon from the world of books. Containers Placed For Dystrophy Coins Reinforced plastic hour-glass containers for contributions to the 1957 Muscular Dystrophy campaign has been placed in several Medford businesses re cently, it was announced. Stores with the containers are restaurants, grocery stores, tav erns and retail stores. Movie TV star Jerry Lewis is national chairman for the annual drive. Medford letter carriers will appear on KBES-TV on Thurs day, Nov. 21, at 5:30 p.m. to explain the carrier's door-to-door campaign which will be made next Tuesday. They will also explain what Muscular Dystrophy is while on the Ore Cal Panaroma program. Federal Mediator To Enter Dispute Los Angeles (IP) Media tor Clarence G. Eddy will begin meeting Monday with Western Air Lines and pilot representa tives in an attempt to settle' a wage dispute, it was announced today. The National Mediation Board assumed jurisdiction in the case, which involves 263 pilots of the airline. The airmen had failed to reach agreement with Western in earlier discussions. Last week, Western agreed with the Airline Stewards and Stewardesses Association on a new contract covering more than 200 stewardesses.
