IP If you're looking for a football player to hang the title of "hero" onto this season, how about Jack Mor ris of Oregon? Morris is the fullback on the Oregon team that has clinched its first Rose Bowl trip in 38 years. He literally kicked the Webfoots into the Pasadena game against Ohio State but his placement booting was only a fraction of his value to the team. Morris also is the top blocker in Oregon's running game; he's the fastest back on the team; he does the punting; is a good pass receiver and is the team leader. On top of that, he already has been drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, who belive that his best pro chances are as a defensive back. . Jack has been little short of sensational in coming through in the clutch for a team that wasn't supposed to have a chance. Oregon has won six out of seven Pacific Coast conference games to date and has at least a tie for the title cinched. Mor ris, a balding Air Force veteran from Medford, Ore., personally has won four of those games. His best effort came last Sat urday against Southern Calif ornia. In overcoming a jinx dat ing back to 1941 in not being able to beat USC in Los Ang eles' giant coliseum, Morris scored a touchdown on a 63 yard run, kicked a 21-yard field goal, ran up 212 yards in 15 carries and added an extra point. Thus he scored 10 points in a ame Oregon won by nine, 16-7. In the first game of the year against Idaho, Morris kicked the first field goal of his college career. Oregon won, 9-6. Against Washington State, a Rose Bowl eligible, Morris kick--ed two extra points. Oregon won, 14-13. Against Stanford, another bowl eligible, Morris kicked three extra points. Oregon won, 27-26. Jack, who ran the low hurdles and 100-yard dash for Oregon's track team, is the PCC record co-holder for consecutive extra points. That string was broken in the Idaho game this season when he had to kick from the 17 after a holding penalty nulli fied his kick that would have shattered the old mark. He now ranks third among Oregon's all-time rushing lead ers, behind Shanley and George Bell, the latter of 1947-48-49 vintage. About the only thing Morris hasn"t done this year is pass, but he probably could do that, too. Acting as spokesman for the team when it returned from the Southern Cal game last Sunday to a joyous welcome, Morris said: "The players and I want you to get excited about only one thing: Beat the Beavers (Ore gon State). We'll begin worrying about the Rose Bowl after this Saturday." SIPCDinrS Injuries To Keep Pro Grid Stars Out of Key Contests By EARL WRIGHT United Press Sports Writer Injuries will keep at least three and possibly five stars out of Sunday's key National Foot ball league games. The oddsmakers, who keep a close . watch on injuries, have made the Colts 6V2 point choices to whip the San Fran cisco Forty-Niners at Baltimore. The Lions are fVz point choices to defeat the Chicago Bears at Detroit. The Colts, Lions and Forty-Niners are tied for the Western Division lead. The Browns are 3Vi point fa vorites against the Los Angeles Rams at Cleveland while Ahe New York Giants are 6V point favorites to beat the Cards at Chicago. The Steelers are fa vored over the Green Bay Pack ers by 3V$ points at Pittsburgh and the Washington Redskins are favored over the Eagles by lVfe at Philadelphia. Detroit is in top shape to play before a capacity home crowd of more than 55,000 but the Bears will go into the "grudge" game, without Harlon Hill. Hill, all league offensive end, suf fered a shoulder injury during last Sunday's 29-14 loss to the Colts. He is out for the season. Ed Meadows of the Bears started a flurry of "dirty play" charges last Dec. 16 when his tackle of Bobby Layne sent the Detroit quarterback to the side lines with a concussion. The Bears went on to win the game and the Western Division title. The Colts and 49ers may play without star pass receivers. Clyde Conner, 49er end, defin itely is out with shoulder in jury. Jim Mutscheller, Balti more end, may not play. He has a sprained ankle. Tackle Bob St. Clair and Bob Holladay, a defensive back, also are out of the Forty-Niner line up. Los Angeles will play Cleve land without Will Sherman, one of its best defensive backs. He has a dislocated elbow. Webster in Hospital Alex Webster, New York half back may not play at Chicago. He still is in the hospital with an ear infection which kept him out of last week's 13-0 victory over the Eagles. Norb Hecker, veteran Wash ington safety man, won't play against the Eagles because of a twisted knee.- Bill Michael, Pittsburgh guard who has been out with a broken leg bone, will be in uniform and may play against the Packers. Willie Lee, Steeler tackle, has a pulled tendon but will play. This week's selections: Lions (5-3) over Bears (3-5), Colts (5-3) over Forty-Niners (5-3), Browns (6-1-1) over Rams (4-4), Giants (6-2) over Cards (2-5), Packers (2-6) over Steelers (4-3), Red skins (2-5-1)- over Eagles (2-6). Footballers Change Into Hoop Togs Medford High varsity basket ball roster swelled to 25 yester day with the addition of some 10 sophomores and juniors who have been on the football squad. Senior aspirants for berths on the Black Tornado hoop crew, who have been out for football, are not to report until next week, Head Coach Frank Roelandt re ported. He indicated that he will choose his more or less perman ent squad some time next week. Roelandt has five lettermen from last year's runner-up club for district laurels. They are Don Bowling, Bilbee Lane, sen iors, and Don Peek, junior, who are now drilling, and Tom Ham lin and Frank Albert, seniors who have been playing football. Hamlin is the most experienced among the returnees. Some of the underclassmen are looking very good, Roelandt stated. ' Medford will bid this fall for a fourth straight trip to the state A-l tournament at Eugene. Although two of the five teams from the Southern Oregon con ference 'will qualify, the Black Tornado is expected to have a rough road in its quest of a tour ney jaunt. 9muwr7 : ' - r. - HMii nmu mm mil r t JACK MORRIS 1 Kicks Ducks Into Bowl KC Trades Bill Martin To Detroit Detroit (IP) Billy Martin, 29, a scrappy infielder who boasts the New York Yankees never lost a pennant while he was in their line-up, was obtain ed by the Detroit Tigers today in a 13-player trade with the Kansas City Athletics. Martin moved to the Tigers along with outfielders Gus Zer nial and Lou Skizas, pitchers Tom Morgan and Mickey McDer mott and catcher Tim Thomp son. Detroit gave up outfielders Bill Tuttle and Jim Small, catch er Frank House, and pitchers Duke Maas and John Tsitouris in the swap. Night Club Brawl The Tigers will send two min or league players to the Aeth letics at a later date to com plete what Detroit officials termed "one of the biggest trades in our history." Martin, a fiery native of San Francisco, who was with the Yankees for five years before his exit last summer after an alleged night club brawl in New York, was the key player in the trade from Detroit's point of view. He is expected to take over the shortstop job for the Tigers and pave the way for Harvey Kuenn to move to right field or first base. ZernJal, a power hitter, had long been sought by the Tigers. He has banged out 225 home runs during his major league career which started with the Chicago White Sox in 1949. Ohio State, second in the na tional ratings, is a three-point choice over Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich.; UCLA seven over Southern Cal at Los Angeles, and Princeton seven over Dart mouth in a game at Princeton, N.J., which will decide the Ivy League championship. North Carolina State was picked over South Carolina, Baylor over Southern Methodist and Missouri over Kansas, all by the margin of a single point.
