o RfllCHig an National New York KB Michigan State took over the top spot in the United Press college football ratings today in the wake of weekend upsets that dropped Texas A&M to foutrh place and Oklahoma to fifth. Ogio State jumped up to the Ho. 2 rating; Auburn, one of the two remaining perfect - record teams in the major college ranks, could not advance last week's No. , ranking; and Notre Dame returned to the top 10 group in ninth place on the strength of its stunning 7-0 upset victory which mapped Oklahoma's 47 game winning streak. Mississippi was another new comer in this week's top ten ad vancing from 11th place to sixth. Navy, Iowa, Notre Dame and Army rounded out the select group in that order. Rice, which produced a major shocker Saturday by beating last week's top-ranked Texas A&M," 7-6, was placed 13th in the week ly ratings of the 35 leading coaches who comprise the United Press board. Auburn, 6-0 conquereor of weak Georgia, attracted thmost first place votes from the coaches. L survey of the possibilities for bids in the four major bowls Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cot ton shows that nine "probables or possibles" have a record of 61 wins, 12 losses and 3 ties. There was a day when it took , perfect record to get a major bowl invitation. Those days are gone forever, it appears tinder the duress of college politics and the NCAA. As of now it appears that the champions of the Big Ten and the Pacific Coast conference will tangle in the Rose Bowl. The PCC title holder may be Oregon, which has a 7-2 record. But the Webfoots could easily lose to Oregon state a bowl-non-eligible and enter the game against Ohio State 7-1 with a 7-3 record. How About This? Or how about the Orange Bowl? It just so happens that Oklahoma, with its 7-1 mark, is eligible this year. Otherwise, Missouri, with a 5-3-1 mark, might be playing against Duke, which has 6-1-2. Doesn't sound exactly inviting, does it? Then there's the case of the Cotton Bowl. Texas A&M, with an over-all record of 8-1, may BOWLING SENIOR-JltjlOB LEAGUE fundings: W. L. Kennedy, a 22-year-old Scot who now lives in Toronto, cap tured his first major title Mon day when he defeated Ron De lany, the Olympic 1,500-meter champion from Ireland and Vil lanova university, in the IC4-A Cross Country meet. The Spartans posted a low total of 86 points to retain the IC4-A team crown in a warm up for next week's NCAA fea ture. Notre Dame was second in the team race, followed by Perm State, Cornell and Syracuse. get the bid. Or it might be RJce, which has won 5, lost 3. They are tied in conference standings. One of the service teams, Army or Navy, could furnish the oppo sition. Army has a 7-1 mark, but was just barely able to squeeze by Utah, which lost to such teams as Idaho, Colorado and Denver. Navy was beaten by North Carolina and tied by Duke. And either Army or Navy must lose in their traditional clash this Saturday. And This? The Orange Bowl will get Ole Miss, a team with an 8-1 record the lone loss being to Arkansas, which has lost three of its last four games. The opposition may be Rice or Texas A&M and you've already heard about their records. But if you think the colleges have crazy mixed up football records, take a look at the pro fessional standings. When east meets west for the annual championship clash this year, the western representative may come into the game with a very so-so, 8-5 or 9-5 record yeah, that's right. The extra game or games would come from a play off after the regular season ends in a tie. The western champion may have have a 9-3 or 10-2 mark or less. And how come we haven't heard anyone blaming Sputnik for their miserable showings this year? ' (International Soundphoto) Norblad Scoffs af Non - Oregon City OP) Rep. Walt er Norblad (R-Ore.) today scoffed at the recent flight of Gen. Curtis LeMav non-stop to i Buenos Aires as an Air Force publicity stunt that proved "a total of nothing." Speaking before the Oregon City Chamber of Commerce, Norblad said "this non-stop trip looks to me like an Air Force publicity scheme of little or no value, which simply resulted in a lot of waste of manpower and valuable jet fuel." He added that "the money ex pended in this operation could much better have been used on STANFORD LISTS INJURIES Stanford, Calif. (IP) Four Stanford Indians are on the cas ualty list, but Coach Chuck Tay lor expects to have three of them in shape in time for Satur day's Big Game against the Uni versity of California Bears. UCLA BLACK OUT Los Angeles ' (IP) Coach Henry (Red) Sanders today faced the prospect of playing Southern California Saturday without the Bruins' top offense leader, Chuck Kendall. Ov er ate Poll took over the first two ratings with 310 and 283 points, respec tively. Auburn had 278 points. This marked the first time in the eight-season history of the United Press ratings that two teams from the same conference placed 1-2 in any weekly ballot of the coaches. Ohio State clinched the Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl berth by beating Iowa, 17-13. Michigan State, the National Champion in 1952, winds up its season Saturday against Kansas State. Ohio State takes on Mich igan, while Auburn still has games remaining against Flori da State and Alabama. Valdes Bout Due Tonight Bangor, Me. If the Havana fighter gets by Dyer, he is slated to meet Ar gentine heavyweight hopeful Alex Miteff in Denver, Colo., Jan. 7. The winner of that bout would get a title shot. Russo Gains TV Fights New York (IP) Young Danny Russo will get another TV flight at St. Nicholas Arena, Dec. 23, because of his return decision over substitute Peter Schmidt in Monday night's return bout. Russo of Brooklyn, a 2-1 fa vorite, eked out a majority ver dict with his close-quarter at: tack in the ninth and 10th rounds against tired Schmidt of New York. It was the first 10 rounder for each. A rainy-night crowd of 1,007 saw Russo register his 12th vic tory in 15 fights, and Schmidt lose his sixth in 17. Oklahoma, Texas A&M Fall; Upset Teams By HARRY WISMER New York (IP) The mighty have fallen, and now both Okla homa and Texas Aggies have to pick themselves up and get go ing again. Rice's defeat of Bear Bryant's Aggies was a notable one, but it was completely over shadowed by Notre Dame's bril liant effort at Norman, Okla., an effort seldom equalled in the an nals of intercollegiate sport. The preparedness of the No tre Dame team was impressive. Whoever scouted the Oklahoma team had done a thorough job, and Brennan and company had Stop Flight our missile and satellite pro grams." He said a similar type flight in an operational aircraft with a normal weapon load would be of value. LeMay's flight was made in a tanker plane normally used to refuel other aircraft. (International) Yankees Offer Players As Opening Attempts n 'Regaining' Series New York (IP) The de throned New York Yankees, los ing little time in an attempt to get back on the winning track, already, have offered- four of their "expendables" in the hope of coming up with another front line pitcher for 1958. Tommy Byrne", Harry Simp son, Enos Slaughter and Joe Col lins all were offered to various clubs during the past few weeks and there is a chance two or three of those four may figure in a deal during the Major-Minor league meetings at Colorado Springs, Colo., Dec. 2-7. The Baltimore Orioles are es pecially interested in Simpson, whom Paul Richards feels can help his club at first base. Simpson came to the Yanks from Kansas City last June in the Billy Martin deal. Rate Praise been masterful in instructing the winners, especialy on defense. Notre Dame played fundamental football. The Irish tackled and blocked in the line, and while Williams, Lynch and Pietrosante grabbed the headlines, you've got to take your hats off to the forward wall. It was strictly a team ef fort. One thing the victory empha sized you find your best and your toughest football in the Middle West, taking it week in and week out. The Irish had been toughened by a rough schedule; the Sooners hadn't. That was the basic difference. The win made the season for Notre Dame. The bowl situation is pretty well wrapped up. Ohio State's win over Iowa gave the Buck eye's the trip to the West and killed the hopes of Michigan State. Oregon will provide the so called Rose Bowl opposition. It's Duke and Oklahoma for the Orange Bowl; Mississippi and probably Texas or Rice in the Sugar Bowl; Texas Aggies have to :beat Texas for the Cotton Bowl bid and if Navy beats Army, the Middies go there. Aft er that there isn't much left. COP PREPS FOR ARIZONA Stockton, Calif.
