TELEVISION By John TWO VERY FUNNY BOOKS Two of my favorite authors have committed books recently. Richlrd Maney'i "Fanfare" is supposed to b his autobiogra phy though it barely scratches the surface of Mr. Maney's mul tifarioui exjritnces. You flron't find any funnier 'book than ths to anywhere (gfid I'm thinking of running Q$iem as an -entry for Christmas presents among those few peo .' I feel confident would thor oughly appreciate them. "Fan (Jare" to give Mr. Maney'i age precedence ovar Miss Kerr's eauty is th record of a sort of Broadway that is hard to find any more and Maney, whose flashing candor hat paralyzed lome of the most monumental (jlgoS in the theatar, expresses his opinions nd tells his tales ith ringing authority. On the question, for example, of Wil- liam Gaxton, who for a time was leading man in one hit musical after another: "No one with so little talent ever rose so high in the theater. &n indifferent dancer and sing er, he had the nerve of Willie Sutton and an excellent set of teeth. Of midnight in (E. (Ray) Goetz's suite in the Ritz in Boston, I listened to Gaxton argue that he and he alone should be on the stage at the fin (je of the first act. The inscrut able Goetz peered at his oppon ent over his champagne glass, fascinated by th range of his paranoia." THERE'S a whole chapter de voted to Billy Rose, for whom Maney labored as press (gfeent for soma years and for whose theatrical judgment he ha, withering words. He (flowered when I ugjested we Resort to subpoenas." fHAT, I shoulfl ay, is a fine example of the Maney style (ffchich is uniquely hia own and that overworked word. in imitable. If it reminds you lltrongly of Tallulah Bankhead's tyl, it is only because Mr. Jlaney has for a quarter century been Miss Bankhead's too arti culate ghost. This is not to im ply that Miss Bankhead hasn't brain of her own but her own prose style was not considered susceptible to editing. If Tal lulah had written her own auto biography, it's quite possible it would have been the first book ever penned with a single non stop sentence, conceivably with out even a comma in it. Though consumed by scorn for most of the theatrical gen iuses Maney still has great re spect for Jed Harris whom Noel Coward called "Destiny's tot'.' and he tells you why in typical Maney fashion: "Jed and I hit It off from the start. He didn't like to go to bed either. We shared a suspicion of the thea ter s anointed, we had an other common Interest: Jacques Foumier. Jacques was a left handed first baseman, a wicked hitter but confused when trying to subdue a ground ball. Jac ques once tried to murder Jed. When a soft hopper slithered through Fournier's ankles let ting in the winning run, Jed de nounced the bungler from the front) row of the bleachers. By humorist I mean she writes of common things of husbands and houses and children with great human ity and tremendous perception. I don't know which subject she's funnier on but I suspect it's children. For instance: "My real problem with children is that I haven't any imagination. I'm always warning them against the commonplace defections while they are planning the bi zarre and unusual. Christopher gets up ahead of us on Sunday morning and has long since been given a list of clear directives: 'Don't wake the baby,' 'Don't go outside In your pajamas,' 'Don't eat cookies before break fast. But I never told him 'Don't make flour paste and glue together all the pages of the magazine - section of "The New York Times." ' Now, I tell him, of course." o NE of her ions was pushed broke his arm. What, she in quired, happened to the four-and a-half-year-old blonde who did the pushing? November 17, 1957 Medford Man Guest Editor of Safety Piece in Magazine Wallace R. Peabody, division meter repairman for the California-Pacific Utilities company in Medford, recently was guest editor for a safety message in the company's November issue of Safety Spots. Peabody notes that the first suggestion in safety is "using common sense, reasoning or log ic applied to the job you are doing." He continues that a sec ond important item in safety is "the willingness to spend the necessary time to do it thorough ly and safely." Another ingredient of safety, he writes, is "know your own capabilities and limitations Know what you can do safely, and what you are not capable of doing." Another phase of the same Item is not to overload the capacity of whatever it may be that is being used, he said. Copies from Three R's "Fourth", he continued, "is something I have copied after the three R's they used to speak of in school. Mine turns out to be H.R.R. H equals heeding the voice of experience which is mainly learning and profiting from the expeience and errors of others. The first R equals reading the rules and under standing them. The last R is for remembering to apply or use what you have heard, seen or read." Peabody mentioned over con fidence" in ourselves and a lack of healthy respect for the potential power of what we handle, if it gets out of control. Peabody joined the company in Grants Pass as a serviceman, and was transferred to Medford as a gas meterman in 1948. Prior to that he worked in Medford until 1942, when he joined the Seabees. Six Bombers Fly To Show Power Washington OH The Air Force said Saturday that six B52 jet bombers on a 9,250-mile round-trip flight to Argentina were over the Amazon river at 11:00 a.m. e.s.t. The big bombers, this coun try's H-bomb carriers, are being refueled in flight and no attemtp is being made to set either a dis tance or speed record. But the flight is another dem onstration of this country's strik ing power which President Ei senhower and other leaders have stressed in the wake of Russia's advances in missiles. The planes took off from the Homestead Air Force Base in Florida at 5:50 a.m. The Air Force said the flight is scheduled to circle Buenos Aires this afternoon and head back for the United States. They are to land tomorrow at the Loring Air Force Base in Maine. The big jet bombers are be ing refuelled in flight by KC 135 and KC97 tanker planes. Holmes Friday night said he was grateful that the Legislature had confined its efforts almost solely to tax relief and that the special session had concluded its work on the two specific requests he had made in calling it. In a statement at the close of the session, the Governor said: "I am grateful that this spec ial session has concluded its its work on my specific requests; one for some income tax relief and the second for property tax relief through the basic school support increase of $10 a census child. Alice Keeton, 80, has been a cleaner at a local steel factory for 73 years. Saturday on the anniversary of the day she start ed work in 1884, a limousine will pick her up at her tiny cottage, and drive her to the factory's board room for a champagne and caviar lunch with the firm's dir ectors. The board decided to honor Alice after hearing how she started work for the firm at the age of seven to help her widowed mother. Alice said she was honor ed but hoped the party would not make too much mess. "I'll have to sweep it up on Monday morning," she said.
