EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, November 17, 1957 House of Representatives Directs Secretary to "Love and Cherish" By FRANCES LITTRELL Salem Just before the close of the special session of the leg islature called by Governor Holmes, the legislators passed a Joint Resolution extending feli citations to Secretary of State Mark Hatfield and directing him to "love, honor and cherish." The resolution was introduced by Representatives Field, Ker bow and Layman, single mem bers of the House, duly passed by both bodies, signed by the governor and copies mailed to the Secretary and his fiancee, Miss Antoinette Marie Kuzraa nich, counselor for women at Portland State college. The announcement of Secre tary Hatfield's engagement to Miss Kuzmanich was a pleasant surprise for most of us here at the legislature and our friends here in Salem who know Miss Kuzmanich say she is a perfect ly lovely girl. The first week of the special session, was a warm and gay homecoming. It was such fun to see and be again with our friends and companions of the long winter session. Al immediately introduced a package of three bills: H. B. No. 7, a bill to return to the per 1957 personal property off-set for corporations; H. B. No. 8, a bill to reduce the collection of taxes for 1957 and 1958 by 25 -per cent off of the present schedule; H. B. No. 9, a bill to set up a maximum of ten million dollars surplus at the end of each biennium, the balance of the surplus to go into a special fun to pay off undedicated bonded indebtedness; H. B. 7 and 9 never got out of the House rules committee. H. B. 8 did get to the tax committee and after a very brief hearing it was buried there. New Faces There were many new faces in the House this time, five new members two of which are wom en, Miss Beulah Hand, D. and Mrs. Ruth Chindgren, R., who was appointed to fill out her late husbancTs term of office. There were five women on the floor. There were also new faces in the secretaries ranks due to fact that many of the members have children in school and the wives did not come as secretaries. However, we had very little to do as the sessions seldom were more than 20 min utes long. Each day the House was called to order at 10 a.m., we had prayer given by a dif ferent member of the Ministerial Association of Salem. No. 1, taken from the rules committee and brought to the floor to be voted upon and each day the motion was voted down, and we were dismissed until 10 a.m. the next day. H. B. No. 1, is a bill to take the state out of the real property field. (The bill was passed on the closing day.) Many Republic ans and some Democrats wore large buttons which say "I'm 100 per cent for 30 per cent." Rep resentatives Katherine Musa and her husband Senator Ben Musa, Democrats, are to be commend ed for their brave stand on the bi-partisan tax program in re fusing to accept their party's version of a tax reduction. They feel as Al does that the Dem ocrat's tax program is not real istic and that it does not give any real relief. Governor Visits Governor Holmes and Gover nor Rosellini of Washington paid the House of Representatives a short visit one afternoon. Gov ernor Holmes introduced the Washington Governor and he gave a short greeting. He is a substantial and good looking man and much younger than I had imagined him. I had a nice chat with Jean McAllister at the notions count er one day. Jean was looking for a ruffle to perk up a lamp. She and Bill (Judge McAllister) are busy and happy here in Salem and we were told they are a very popular couple. Most of the social life was confined to luncheons or just "get togethers" among the leg islative members due to the fact that most of the lobbyists are commuting between Portland and Salem and so they are only here in the day time. On the Saturday before the session opened Al and I were included in a group invited to Chancellor and Mrs. Richard's home in Eugene for luncheon. Their residence is a very large and beautiful house that was built many years ago, and was purchased recently by the state, to serve as the Chancellor's home. It is filled with beautiful old furniture. After luncheon we all sat in the president's box and saw the Oregon-California foot ball game.
