o fclGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) Black Tornado To Bid at Beaverton Saturday for State Semi-final Spot A 35-man squad of Medford high football players will leave Saturday morning to make the Black Tornado's fourth consecu tive bid in Oregon Class A-l play-off semi-finals. They play at Beaverton at 8 p.m. tomorrow and have the role of underdog In their engagement with the District 3 champions. Despite the troubles encounter ed in concluding the Southern Oregon conference and District 6 campaigns, there's confidence in the Medford camp that the Tornado can hit the stride of its Crater and Klamath Falls games and roar past the favored Metro politan leaguers into the semi finals against the Portland city titlists. This feeling has stemmed from good workouts throught this week on the Tornado practice field. Preparations for the Metro beavers hit their peak with a "real good" drill under lights last night. Pass Defense Coach Fred Spiegelberg made the foregoing characterization of practice after he and his aides put the Tornado through it paces from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Quite a bit of pass defense was on the evening agenda as the Medfordites worked to strength en one of the phases of the game in which they hve been hurting this season. Afternoon drill today was to wind up the week's work except for the pre-game warm-up. The work was to include kick-off coverage and returns, punt pro tection and signal drill. In commenting on the physical condition of the Medford squad, Spiegelberg said that he would not start Guard Tom Merton and Halfback Johnny Jones, both of whom are hobbling from twist ed ankles. The defending champion Lin field team is a slight favorite on its home field. Willamette which has a tie on its conference rec ord already, must win to take the title. Quigg, center on last season's NCAA championship squad, suf fered a broken leg and knee which required surgery and a bone graft last Saturday. Starting defensive line may Springfield Eleven Host To McMinnville In A-l Quarter-Final BY UNITED PRESS McMinnville travels to Spring field tonight to play the surpris ing Millers and open a big foot ball weekend in Oregon high school circles. The McMinnville - Springfield game is one of the three quarter final A-l contests. South Salem invades eastern Oregon Satur day afternoon to play Mac-Hi of Milton-Freewater and Medford travels to Beaverton Saturday night. The three winners will join the Portland entry, un doubtedly Jefferson, in the semi finals. McMinnville and Jefferson are the only unbeaten-untied A-l powers in the state. Springfield got to the quarter-finals by tie ing Marshfield and beating South Eugene in its strong district. In the A-2 and B divisions there are one Friday and three Saturday games. Glendale At Elmira Dallas is at Willamina tonight in one A-2 game while Saturday sees Glendale at Elmira and Serra at Vale in afternoon games and Bandon at Seaside in a night contest. Monroe meets Powers at Junction City tonight in an 11 man B game while Saturday con test see Union at Stanfield and Maupin at Merrill in the after- Non-Senior Tiff At Grants Pass Grants Pass Marshfield and Grants Pass High schools will have a preview of the 1958 foot ball season here tongiht. The two clubs have been stripped of their seniors for the season and contest for both schools. The non-senior game was a Marshfield proposal. Coach eMl Ingram of GP reportedly wanted a regular game with seniors but couldn't insist. The Cavemen postponed their Pirate contest in mid-season because of flu and Marshfield was not obligated to make the trip to Grants Pass. Prospect Scene Of Turkey Shoot Prospect Turkey shoot of the Prospect Lions club will be held at the gun club grounds on Sun day, Nov. 17, no matter what the weather, Lions have report ed. Five, Six Per Hour The Grants Pass aspirant is known as a fast bowler but says that speed will not be his basic goal in the week end effort. He hopes to record five or six games per hour and will go at it as Marathon long as he can stay awake. He'll have mostly protein food during the effort and says that an orange juice and egg drink on his menu sounds good "now." Dunham is resting up after having bowled in a league at Grants Pass last night. He has a 182 average in one of the cir cuits. Paul told police he took the gun from a drawer to in vestigate a noise and stopped to watch the show before putting it away. He said the program "got me so excited" he pulled tn trigger.
