Women's Golf Mrs. Williamk Miller is the winner of the 1957 Women's golf trophy at the Rogue Valley Country club. She defeated Mrs. Paul Walker 3 and 2 in the championship flight. The first flight was taken by Mrs. William Blackledge who defeated Mrs. Ruby Nutting. Mrs. Jack Eidswick won 3 and 2 over Mrs. Lee Flink to cop honors in second flight. In the third flight, it was Mrs. John Day over Mrs. Frank Tam ney. Mrs. Day had to go 19 holes to take the honors. Chevrolet dealers Gaspar Ortega Edges Gavilan Los Angeles TP Gaspar Orte ga, in a surprising late finish, won a split decision victory over bolo-punching Kid Gavilan in a scheduled 12-round welterweight elimination bout for the vacant title Tuesday night at Wrigley field. The split decision stunned most of the ring-side press who had Gavilan in front by a wide margin. The United Press card favored the Kid by four points, 116 to 112. Ortega's win evened the score with Gavilan. The 31-year-old Havana, Cuba battler had deci sioned Ortega on July 31 in Mi ami, Fla. Wednesday, October 23, 1957 12-Year-Old Hunter Gets 140-Pound Buck One of the largest deer to be brought down by a local hunter this season was killed by 12-year-old Valton Albert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Val Albert, 937 Holly st. The five-point buck weighed 140 pounds. Young Albert shot the animal with a 30-30 rifle firing from about 25-yards on Rock Spring rd. on the California-Oregon border.. New York OP Defenseman Harry Howell of the New York Rangers, who was practically booed out of Madison Square Garden last season, has become a favorite of the "gallery gods" this year because of his rugged play.
