Hoosicrs Back
To Fundamentals
By UNITED PRESS
Indiana's football squad, re
ported to be plagued by dissen
sion, went back to fundamentals
in practice in an effort to im
prove on its showing.
The dissension allegedly stems
from remarks by Athletic Direct-
j or Frank Allen who said the
j school was "through making
alibis" for the Hoosiers' poor
i record. Two players missed Tues-
day's drill. Bob De Marco and
John Meegan, and it was specu
lated thev had left school.

Gaspar Ortega
Edges Gavilan
Los Angeles TP Gaspar Orte
ga, in a surprising late finish,
won a split decision victory over
bolo-punching Kid Gavilan in a
scheduled 12-round welterweight
elimination bout for the vacant
title Tuesday night at Wrigley
field.
The split decision stunned
most of the ring-side press who
had Gavilan in front by a wide
margin. The United Press card
favored the Kid by four points,
116 to 112.
Ortega's win evened the score
with Gavilan. The 31-year-old
Havana, Cuba battler had deci
sioned Ortega on July 31 in Mi
ami, Fla. Gavilan, the sixth
ranking title contender, scaled
146 as did his- seventh-ranked
opponent.

Jug Takes Back

take a back seat Saturday when

The game is more a "must"

Gophers, since Minnesota plays
eight conference games. But
each club already has lost once
in conference play and another
defeat would seriously endan
ger any chance for the title.
