Groucho Marx Show Said To Be Oldest On Television Net By VERNON SCOTT United Press Writer Hollywood I" Today's quiz: Q. Who has the oldest con tinuous TV show on the air. A. Groucho Marx. His "You Bet Your Life" program moved into its ninth season this month. The mustachioed comedian not only holds the longevity rec ord, he also has the astonishing distinction of being among the top ten in each of his years as quizmaster. "It's really nothing," Groucho naid with exaggerated noncha lance. "But I'm afraid to look back over the years too many people chasing me." Chides Romanoff Ho took out time to peruse the menu in Romanoffs elegant restaurant, and signaled the Maitre 'D. "Get Romanoff over here," he ordered. Prince Michael himself march ed over, his face reflecting the dread of a much abused target for Groucho's blasts. "Mike, you fraud," the comic asked, "Is there anything edi ble on this menu. The whole thing looks suspicious to me." Romanoff flinched. "I don't know why I ask you about the food," Groucho went on. "You can't afford to eat in this joint either." After five minutes of wrang ling, and much to the discom fort of Romanoff, Groucho ord ered a raw hamburger with a single caper and a soupcon of raw onions. Romanoff departed, mumbling about the hardships of running an eatery. "Because I'm the oldtimer on TV other performers ask me how I manage to stay on the ir year after year," Groucho gaid. "The answer is that I've saved my money and remained independent. "I'm not kidding about this. Goldendale Woman Killed in Collision The Dalles (W A Golden dale, Wash., bank teller, Mrs. Blossom H. Davis, 38, died of injuries Sunday suffered in a two-car crash at Rufus, 28 miles east of here on Highway 30. The driver of the car, Donald E. Jackson, also of Goldendale, was hospitalized with a head laceration. He was reported in good condition Sunday by hos pital attendants here. The Jackson car was involved in a collision with an eastbound car driven by Ben Weatherall. of Arlington, who received slight injuries. Mrs. Davis had been employed by the National Bank of Com merce In Goldendale. Church Music Gets Jazz Treatment London HP) Hot trumpets, iweet clarinets and throaty sax aphones replaced the traditional organ in an Anglican church Sunday night and played hymns In swing and jazz time. The congregation, from all re ports, was enthusiastic about it. The Rev. Geoffrey Beaumont conducted the experiment in jazzing up church music at St. Augustin'es church in Highgate, North London. Peter Knight, a top musical arranger, adapted the hymns to modern rhythm. The British Broadcasting cor poration liked the idea so much It televised the service. The orchestra was made up of musicians from some of Lon don's top jazz and swing bands. It included a popular singer and a four-piece rhythm section. Hugh Bryson Denied New Hearing by Court Washington W The Su preme Court today denied a hearing to Hugh Bryson, San Francisco union leader, convict ed of filing a false non-Communist affidavit with the govern ment in 1951. Bryson. as national president of the Marine Cooks and Stew ards union, was indicted in 1953. On conviction by a San Fran cisco jury, he was sentenced to five years in jail and fined $10,-000. POET, NOVELIST DIES Sydney, Australia (W Will Lawson, 80, poet and novel ist, died Saturdav. As long as you're Independent you can do as you please with out worrying about losing your job. "It's coming for sure," he said, "and the advertisers de serve it. They've provided such poor programs people are will ing to pay to see worthwhile en tertainment." Groucho was interrupted by Romanoff who returned with a pleased smile. His mustache quivered importantly. "Incidentally, Mr. Marx." he crowed, "your brother, Harpo. was the first person to eat in my Palm Springs restaurant." ' I know," Groucho concluded dryly. "We just got a report from his doctor." Romanoff moved away again. He didn't come back. Torrential Rains Bring Flooding To Paris of Texas By UNITED PRESS New flooding hit Texas today in the wake of torrential rains that sent the Colorado river over its banks and forced the evacuation of about 100 families at Ballinger, Tex. A series of coludbursts Sun day dumped nearly three inches of rain at points in central Texas and up to nine inches in western portions of the state. Rivers and creeks throughout much of western Texas climbed to flood stage, but the worst damage appeared to be at Bal linger. Highways Blocked Flood waters blocked high ways to the south and west of the city and knocked out tele phone communications. The Red Cross at Abilene sent cots and provisions for the Ballinger evacuees. Stormy weather was common throughout the West Sunday, with only North Dakota, Minne sota, Iowa andNew Mexico fail ing to report rain. East of the Mississippi river, a vast high pressure center brought generally fair skies ex cept for a few thundershowers along the east coast of Florida. Overnight temperatures tum bled under clear skies, with Phillipsburg. Pa., reporting an early morning low of 27 and readings in the 30s common in New England and the Great Lakes. Snow In Colorado The western rains were mixed with snow in western Colorado where 2 to 20 inches of new snow blanketed the Uncompah gre plateau in the Rockies. Light snow also hit the high mountain passes west of Denver, but no main highways were re ported closed. Forecasters predicted contin ued scattered showers or thun derstorms today from the Pacific to the Mississippi except for California. Fair and warmer weather is predicted for the Mississippi east to the Atlantic coast. Japanese Volcano Erupts at Bad Time Tokyo (W The sudden erup tion of Tokyo's "suicide vol cano," Mount Mihara, appeared to be a one-shot blast that came at a bad time, police said today. The unpredictable volcano spewed forth stone and lava in a mighty cough Sunday while hundreds of sightseers were on its slopes and rim. One sightseer, Kiyoma Maki, 24, was killed when hit on the head by a piece of volcanic rock while standing on an observa tion platform. Another 54 were injured by flying stones and hot ashes. The 2-477-foot mountain, not ed for the many suicides by leaps into its crater, is on an island south of Tokyo and tech nically in the greater Tokyo area.
